We were being tracked by our son

I wrote about attending a play last night. Our son in Ireland often rings on a Saturday and he rang while we were in the theatre, thankfully before the play started. Vince didn’t answer it, but in the interval, he sent him a message, telling him where we were. He replied with ‘I can see where you are’. He has some app on his phone which can tell him where we are at any given time. I guess strictly speaking, it tells him where the phone is. We can follow his movements too if we want to although we seldom bother. Once when we did follow him for a short time, we could see where he did a U-turn and went back home. He had obviously forgotten something. Damian will sometimes say ‘it’s really pretty there’ or whatever. I guess it makes us all feel not quite so far apart. The photo is from our last trip to Ireland. I loved the bridges in the country areas. We’ll be back there late next month.

That's a lovely photo. Yes, our location can be checked by others with the smartphone.

It's quite a good thing as regards safety.

I suppose you both installed an app and allowed this app to be tracked... I hope so!

Yes, that is bound to be what happened. I know we don't follow anyone else.

I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. I just don't like the thought of anyone knowing where I am at all times! But yes it certainly has its benefits and it's nice to share pictures of where you are etc. When we first met our next-door neighbour she told me that she tracks her husband's phone so she knows how far away he is and when to start preparing dinner - useful I guess but I still found it weird. I like the idea of being able to just disappear, but I guess people are getting used to this sort of thing and in future maybe won't object?

We only do it with the son in Ireland and even that is a bit weird to me but he and Vince think it's great so I go along with it. I guess it's nice that Damian can follow us when we go tripping off somewhere. I won't be installing it on my phone - even once I learn how to turn it on!

Great photo. We don't have smartphones; so we can't follow each other. It's nice that your son keeps in touch.

Mine may not be a smart phone either. I'm not sure. That's an area where I haven't managed to keep up with the times.

@JudyEv We just have basic flip phones. We mostly call each other; so we don't need anything fancy. We do miss out on a few things though. Some perks from companies require you to scan the codes; and we can't do that.

@JudyEv Are you sure the App has no leak - anything is possible I just search for a product and in seconds I get messages offering the product by many companies - just saying

@allknowing Fair enough and I don't know for certain I guess but we haven't noticed anyone following us yet. That's a good start.

That's so nice that you will get to travel back to Ireland soon. How long of a flight is that from Australia, and how many layovers to you have along the way?

I think it's about 24 hours. We change planes in Dubai but only have an hour or two there. There are time zones too which make it hard for me to say exactly but it's around 24 hours.

@moffittjc It's one of the concerns as we get older. How many more trips will we feel able to manage?

@JudyEv - I know you are looking forward to going back to Ireland. I would love to visit someday. The only person I track is my husband. Sometime his medical aide, or a friend, will take him somewhere, and I like being able to know where he is! His memory is getting bad, and I would hate for him to wander away!

@JudyEv - I don't write here as often as I used to. In addition to my blog, which keeps me busy, I now also have an Etsy store. I earn more from those two little side businesses, so I concentrate on them. Only on "slow" days do I have time for MyLot. However, I like the people I have "met" here, and I like to check in occasionally and see how everyone is doing. I am having knee surgery on March 2, so I may drop off the internet almost entirely for a couple of weeks during my recovery. I have heard it will be painful.

@DeborahDiane May I ask what you're selling on your Etsy store? I'm glad your side lurks are making a little money for you. Good luck with the knee surgery. It does seem painful for most but also of great benefit. One friend had very little pain at all. Hopefully you'll be one of the minority that don't have a lot of pain.

That would give you such peace of mind. I'm sure they can be used for bad as well as good but it's nice for us - and for you - to track of our special people. I hope you're doing well. I don't see you here too often.

I think this is a bit of a downside to modern tech, especially with things like iTags that can be placed on you or your car and tracked, even if you don't have a phone

Now that would be a worry! Once these things are out there, you can't 'recall' them again. We just have to learn to deal with it all I guess.

@JudyEv Pretty sure that with iTags, if you have an iPhone it will tell you if one is close by. Not sure where that leaves us with Android phones

@JudyEv I wish Dustin was here (for so many reasons) today to see all of the advanced technology. He loved all of the computers and engineering and was planning on going to college to be an engineer like my Dad.

Modern technology occasionally astounds you with what it is capable of. Consider the possibility that he is thousands of miles away and still knows where you are. Knowing that can occasionally be reassuring, but it can also be dangerous if the wrong people get their hands on the technology. Think about someone being able to locate you.

@JudyEv Good that there is this security to allow anyone permission to track you. I guess this is a security measure they adapted to be sure who you will allow you to be tracked.

I can't imagine anyone else wanting to track us but I know the police etc have these capabilities but in this case we had to give him permission to do this.
