Rice or Pasta?

I like both. But, I do prefer rice mostly over pasta. They both have their uses and their purposes. But honestly, I find rice to be much more versatile and adaptable to dishes than pasta is. Plus, being the cheapo guy I am, it also works better for the wallet since rice is typically cheaper and goes much farther. Granted, which I choose to use depends on the dish. I mean, I guess I could make spaghetti and meatballs with rice. But that would just be weird. Which do you prefer and why? Rice, or pasta?

You are like most of Indonesian people. They can eat noodles with rice, but I don't like it.

Both are amazing, but you can do so much with rice. Even more so, I can eat white rice with nothing on it, (I don't prefer to,) but it can be eaten plain, where as plain pasta...that is just sad.

@porwest there are so many different kinds of pasta, but you can just have basic rice and turn it into anything and it is amazing!

That's kind of my thinking too, beyond the fact that I prefer the texture and taste of rice over pasta, that there are just many more things you can do WITH rice that you can't do with pasta.

Both - depending on the dish of course. Rice is in my blood (I'm Japanese). I grew up on it and now I like various rice varieties . . . I could literally eat rice with anything. I love my pasta too though (do Asian noodles count?). Mom's spaghetti was always my favorite . . . having it was a treat . . . not having it a lot made me crave it more. Both will stretch a meal. I think I do like rice a tad more than pasta .

@porwest My lunch today was jasmine rice with kabocha chicken curry . . . with that it's gotta be rice. Have you had brown rice pasta?

It definitely does depend on the dish. Incidentally I prefer dishes with rice over pasta dishes. But that's just me. Rice is just good eats. But yes, I like both.

@much2say That sounds good. I do like curry but is the chicken spicy made that way? As for brown rice pasta, I can't say I have had that. What is it, just noodles made with rice?

lol. Even most of the time I prefer the word "frugal." It sounds way more defined than cheap, and less intense than "survivor."

It does depend on the dish. I would say rice, but my wife would say pasta. So I guess it also depends on one's taste for certain kinds of dishes.

We Asians would choose rice over pasta. Although I enjoy both rice and pasta, I think that for regular meals, rice would be the most practical and cost-effective option due to our access to it.

@porwest It is also true that people who live close to China favor noodles. I think most in Southeast Asia like rice. Similar to pasta in Europe, noodles are a common meal in this country.

It does seem that most Asian dishes use rice. I do like some of the Asian noodle dishes too though. Lo Mein is one of my favorites.

I'm more of a pasta person. I don't know why. I guess my tastes have changed. I used to have buttered rice every now and again. Now, I don't think I've done that in years.

I guess it does also depend on what kinds of foods one prefers over the others. I mean, if one is into sauces both red or white, pasta is the way to go. Gravies and soups? Then it is rice. Although I guess you could call many Asian condiments "sauces," but they are quite different of course. Generally I eat way more rice than pasta. But if I were to ask my wife this question she would say pasta.

We can definitely sometimes get too much of something and get tired of it. When I worked for Kraft Pizza Company where we made Jack's, DiGiorno and Tombstone, we used to have a freezer full of broken pizzas in the break room with pizza ovens and I ate so much frozen pizza that for a while I could not even look at a frozen pizza. lol

I, too, think that rice is more versatile. I like pasta when the sauce over it is awesome. I love the easy pasta with pesto I make (a favorite of my grandchildren for a long time). But now I make rice to last me a week every week. In a Tupperware in the fridge it is a side for almost anything. And while pastadoes not heat well in a microwave oven, rice can be heated to perfection there in 2 minutes.

They all have their purposes. I do like spaghettis and alfredos and things like that. But I also LOVE fried rice and lots of other dishes that use rice. As for rice, I always cook mine on the stove. And never use the quick, Minute variety.

If I had to choose between the three, rice, pasta and potatoes, it would be rice and potatoes for me. And probably potatoes would win since I do eat much more potatoes than rice and much more rice than pasta. So in that group, rice would be a #2 with potatoes at #1 and pasta at #3.

@thislittlepennyearns I think you are right. I mean, what's a 10 lb bag of potatoes these days? $4? $5? I think the last time I bought rice I got 2 five pound bags for about $3 each or something like that. Rice is much more versatile than potatoes are though.
