Artificial Intelligence - For or against

A lot of people are talking these days about Artificial Intelligence (AI). Some seem to have this fear that machines will take over the world. They have visions of some science fiction movie where humans are slaves to robots. We are a long way off from something like that being a reality. So, should we be afraid of AI?
Whether it's a robot or some other type of machine, it runs based on a program. So someone wrote the code and someone else is funding the research. So, should the fear be of the machine or the people behind these machines?

I am less concerned about the machine than I am about the people behind the machines. It is their agenda that we need to be concerned about. A toaster years ago would have been a major advancement. It has a use, a purpose. If that same toaster could track your daily activity and upload it to a database somewhere, then that's a problem. The toaster doesn't define its purpose, people do.

Do you fear your car or your microwave. I kind of see it that way. I know that a robot or some other intelligent machine is different. However, it works from a program. For me, any sinister is from the creator. If you build something that can become bad, you should stop building it.

@jstory07 What is good or bad? It is a matter of perspective sometimes. Bad for you maybe something that harms someone or destroys the environment. That same thing may be viewed as good because it generates a lot of revenue for a corporation. So, for the corporation it is good.

@LadyDuck Thanks for your comments. As you are very familiar with the topic, perhaps you can help with something here. There was a project at MIT some years ago. They were working on a machine that they were trying to get to the level of a 4 year old in terms of emotions, learning, etc. The machine was named COG. Do you know what happened with this project?

AI will certainly replace many people's work in the future. The creator will not stop developing it.The machine is controlled by humans, but if there are bad people behind the machine, it is certainly a human disaster.

Yes, bad actors arena major problem. AI has existed for decades. The push now is to take it to another level. It seems to be somewhat unchecked. So, humanity will bear the brunt of what someone has in mind.

Artificial intelligence is a rapidly advancing technology that is transforming many industries and aspects of our daily lives. Like any technological advancement, it can be met with skepticism and even fear, but history has shown that new technologies eventually become accepted and integrated into society.
Just as flying was once viewed as unnatural and even evil, it is now a common means of transportation that has enabled people to connect with distant places and cultures. Similarly, artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize the way we live, work, and interact with each other.
While there are certainly ethical and societal implications that need to be considered, it's important to approach AI with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the potential benefits it can bring. As with any new technology, there will be challenges and adjustments to be made, but the future is full of possibilities for those who are willing to embrace change.

Yes, I agree it is people behind the machines we should concern ourselves with.
However, I can tell you a true life story about A.I. falling off the hinges if you are interested?
