TV Theme Song Top Ten: Rawhide (#8)

When I got to Chuy’s this morning I saw a sign touting National Margarita Day. I was thinking it was today, which is terrible because it’s also Fat Tuesday. No, it’s tomorrow, the start of Lent. Guess the Protestants and the non-religious will have to take up the slack. Enough of that, here’s another song from the list of my ten favorite television theme songs.
#8: Rawhide - Frankie Laine
Let me save the Grouchy Old Man the typing effort: yes, this version PALES in comparison to the Blues Brothers’ rendition, but you take what you can get.
And hey, didn’t I just use Frankie Laine in the last countdown? Yes, thanks for remembering!
I was WTY (Way Too Young) for this show. It started before I was born and was gone by the time I was potty trained. I have seen some episodes in reruns. It’s probably best known for being the vehicle to stardom for Clint Eastwood (and no, he didn’t tell a single cow “Go ahead, make my day” ).
I got to meet Sheb Wooley, who was also in series, after a concert in Nashville. He went on to a little stardom on his own, thanks to “Purple People Eater.”
And no, this isn’t as good as the Blues Brothers’ rendition. But they had to put the band back together for us to get that rendition, and that hadn’t happened when this show aired.
Rawhide
Written by Ned Washington and Dimitri Tiomkin
Recorded by Frankie Laine
From Rawhide, 1959-66

Holy cow! How did I miss that today is Fat Tuesday? I guess that's why my friends in New Orleans have been posting pictures of floats and beads.
Well, that settles it. Pancakes for dinner tonight!

Holiday Inn in the Quarter is $3200 tonight, $154 tomorrow. They didn’t forget.
Bet they won’t have pancakes tomorrow at the breakfast bar!

@FourWalls I think I totally blanked on it because I've been sitting at home for the past week or so. If I were at work, I'd definitely see related store displays and we'd be making relevant food (especially tomorrow -- I know one coworker will insist on us serving clam chowder for Ash Wednesday).
I pulled some packages of sausage links and some bacon out of the freezer. I might not be able to stand long enough to make pancakes myself, but I have a mix in the cabinet and can give someone directions. I'l make the bacon and sausage in the oven after I get back from the podiatrist.

I was soooo in love with Roddy Yates... so what if I was only 7/8/9 at the time?

I understand. I had some major crushes at that age myself (Christopher George and Edward Mulhare).

I think the Blues Brothers took it to a new level. Either way it’s great.

@DWDavis — “lawyers dwell on small details,” as Don Henley once sang.

@FourWalls Akyroyd did a great job with the song. From what I read, because of copyright, his rendition wasn't included on the sound track.

I’m surprised you had American TV shows in the city or the sticks!

@FourWalls Our shows were almost all US or UK for a great many years. The Westerns were very popular.

I never watched the show; but I love this catchy tune. "Cut 'em out, ride 'em in....Rawhide!"

I was afraid it might give you a country music headache.

"Keep them doggies rollin, Get um up move em out, Rawhide!" Frankie did a great job on that TV tune Nice pick
Some nice acting credits for Sheb too, he portrayed outlaw Ben Miller in High Noon (1952), and Clint was nice enough to cast him in The Outlaw Josey Wales!
I just started watching the reruns on Pluto channel. You could tell Clint had something even then, just like Steve McQueen did in The Bounty Hunter.

Thanks for the ear worm. I will say I am better at appreciating the complexities of this recording now in my old age than I was when the show was on. My mom probably hated it so we did not see it often.

Funny how theme songs will stay long after the show goes. There’s one coming up from i show that I didn’t care for…but the theme is in the top ten!

I was in the French Quarter on New Year’s Eve one year. That’s enough excitement for me for one lifetime.

No problem. Zevon could’ve done this before “Roland” and somehow made it fit. I mean, he did “What’s New, Pussycat” one time I saw him.
