The tingle tree - a mighty giant

I sometimes commented on here that I haven’t been able to find a particular photo. Later, of course, when I’m looking for something else, then the ‘lost’ photo will turn up. I have a lot of photos and have them sorted in a number of files. Mostly this works well but occasionally it doesn’t. One that I found recently that I thought would be worth showing was of our Subaru parked in a hollowed-out tingle tree. Our sons look to be about 8 and 6 which would make the year 1980 or thereabouts. It was situated in the Valley of the Giants near Walpole in the south-west of Western Australia. The red tingle (Eucalyptus jacksonii), is endemic to the area and one of our tallest trees. The bark is thick, rough and stringy. It is shallow-rooted and the base buttresses out to support its great height. This tree fell in 1990 during a storm. Compression round the base for vehicles such as ours contributed to its demise. If only we’d known.

I've got all of my photos sorted into different folders and I still can't find some I took of Pretty and her brother when they were younger. It's annoying.

I've tried to systematic but my 'systematising' doesn't always work!

@JudyEv I should do what I did years ago with family photos. (It took me a year to sort through all the photos mom had plus the ones each family member had.) Make a folder with each person's name on it and put every photo with them in it into their folder.

@DaddyEvil I have files for food, fauna, flora, West Australia, horses, cats, dogs, cattle, wildlife - the list goes on and on and they almost all have sub-folders. But things still get lost.

If only trees could talk. They would have so much to tell about what they saw in their lifetime.

They would indeed. So many stories they could tell.

This is a lovely photo. We scanned so many the past months, those were slides and not photos, it's a never ending tasks, but there are some that I really like.

@JudyEv I am sure that, once we have gone, all those slides will be thrown. May be some photos in the albums will survive, very may be.

I'd like to try to rationalise our photos a little. We have way too many and they will mean nothing to those who have to dispose of them - which is a good thing I guess. They'll be able to chuck them out without compunction.

@LadyDuck It's hard for me to throw any out but hopefully who tidies up our affairs won't find it so hard. Maybe I should scan more just so we have a copy of them.

When I was small there was a similar tree- another species- on the highway in my state. Folks would drive through it and take their photos of the event. Such photos make me cry now. You and your children are charming there.

@JudyEv I treasure the super tall fir tree that lives at the back of my property. It has to be super old though daughterr doesn't think it could be old growth. I want to have a little bench there by next summer. I think it would be a great spot to sit and write though there is no privacy from neighbors.

It's sad that people didn't know they were compacting the earth around this one and that was shortening its life. There is another very big one but they've put a boardwalk round it to stop the compaction.

@sallypup Hopefully the neighbours will have more to do than to sit and spy on you. If they do, start picking your nose or doing something gross. That'll learn 'em!!

It's massive, isn't it? Wouldn't it make a great cubby for a child?

Wow! Cool picture. The tingle trees must be similar in size to our Sequoias and Redwood trees.

I think yours are generally just a little bigger. We only have the odd one here and there that matches yours.

They look a bit like the giant redwoods in California. They are super amazing to view.

I think the redwoods, sequoias and tingles (and perhaps the karri) are much on a par when it comes to height but ours are normally a bit shorter.

Your photo caught my eye immediately. I just read an article about the loss of giant trees due to people and not the elements. Well, what can you do about it now? At least we learn. That's an adorable photo with you, your adorable boys, and the car.

Thanks for the kind words. They now have boardwalks round the big trees that are accessible to people. That will stop the compaction of the earth at their bases.

I think redwoods and sequoias are both generally bigger but the odd tingle and karri get up there among the highest too.

They estimate the tree was over 400 years old so it had seen a lot of sunrises and sunsets.

We have a tree like that (if it did not burn in one of the fires we had) in the California Redwoods. My daughter and I stopped there on a trip down to San Francisco. She had her learners driving permit and I let her drive through it.

Yes, I've heard about that one and I've seen a photo of a felled tree and the 'top' of the trunk, given it's horizontal, has been sawn flat. There is a team of horses and a buggy actually ON the trunk. Now that has to be a big tree too.
