Did S.C. Johnson Lose a Customer?

Yes. That's the short answer. S. C. Johnson, who sells Glade spray air fresheners lost a customer effective essentially last week. We used to buy the sprays from Walmart for 97 cents, and occasionally we would get them at Menard's for the same price when they had their 11% off rebate promotion going—which seems to be always now. So, at Mendard's, a can was essentially 89 cents. Last week Glade spray air fresheners were on our shopping list to replenish. Normally we will buy about three at a time. But they jumped from 97 cents per can to $1.48 per can. We bought two. One can less than per our usual. When we were at Menard's today the cans were $2.38. No way I am paying THAT, so we left them in the store. So, for the time being we have switched. We bought a can of Wizard, made by AMG Brands, at The Dollar Tree for $1.25. A typical can of Glade is 7.6 ounces and a can of Wizard is 10 ounces. And by the way, the can size use to be 8 ounces. So, what is the equivalent comparable price of a can of Wizard to a can of Glade? 95 cents. 2 cents cheaper than our old price, and 53 cents cheaper than the new price. Unless and until Glad spray air fresheners come back down in price we will look for alternatives to it. So, that's the short answer. Yes. They lost a customer. How do they get us back? They have to be cheaper than everyone else. Do I prefer Glade? Sure. Am I willing to pay an immediate 52.6% more for it? Plus with 0.04 ounces less? Not in a New York minute!

I don't blame you. I am not going to over pay for anything if I didn't have to.

Me either. Eggs have been something like that. I wanted to pick up a couple more dozen, but they were $2.49 at Ruler and $2.99 at Aldi, so I left them there. I can do without if I have to, and I still have a dozen left that I paid $1.79 for. Still high, but not $2.99 high.

@porwest I know what you mean. Down here in Florida, eggs are going for 6 dollars/dozen. And that's at the chain stores like Walmart and Winn-Dixie. Not sure what the cost is at our Aldi, but those prices are insane.

@kaylachan FINNALLY eggs have come back down. I didn't buy them for about 3 months. My last egg purchase was 99 cents per dozen, the one before that $1.19 per dozen, and a couple of weeks ago they were 88 cents per dozen. The prices were high on eggs everywhere, along with everything else.

I've noticed the weight and volume of items decreasing but with no corresponding decrease in price. Manufacturers can be very cunning sometimes.

@porwest Our price tickets are now required to have the price per gram/whatever on them as well as the total price. So-called 'bargains' very often turn out to be dearer rather than cheaper.

@JudyEv We have "unit prices" on display as well, but a lot of people don't pay attention to them.

Yep. I mean, they call it shrinkflation and it's been around for decades. But it has definitely gotten worse. Even at Ruler they started changing their cheese slices from 8 ounce standard to 6 ounces. I won't buy them. I've done the math on the unit cost and even if the total price is cheaper, the overall price is not.

We only really use it when we go #2. Otherwise we find other ways to freshen the house up a bit like opening windows (when we can) and maybe burning a candle every once in a while.

I have never seen Glade at The Dollar Tree. I mean, if it WERE before the price increase it would have been too expensive there even. But now it would be cheaper.

That's part of the reason for the decision. A small jump is one thing. Nearly 53% is another, especially when at the same time they made the can smaller. So, with that, it's probably more like a 55% jump.

The best way to save money is to fold it up and put it back in your pocket. That is essentially what I did. lol

Not that I am aware of. But you would think they must have one. I will have to look the next time I am there. I don't recall ever seeing a "compare to Glade" version.

We switched to the Walmart generic air freshener spray when the Glade jumped in price the first time... We don't use air freshener sprays enough to matter, though. But I wasn't paying more for something we rarely use.

My wife uses it more than I do. We mostly use it in the bathroom. Being that my wife leaves for work before I do, I just go #2 after she leaves and don't feel the need to cover anything up when there is no one here but me and the cats.

@porwest Pretty uses it more than I do... Her nose is more sensitive than mine and she swears if I don't add water to the fish tank often enough, she smells a fishy odor. I've never noticed and nobody that visits us can smell it, either. (I have asked my sister and brother-in-law.)

Wow! That is a big jump in price. I don't even use air fresheners so don't care about how much they cost lol.

Spend an hour or two collecting carts at the grocery store. You'll be able to make up the difference.

Honestly, this could work. Many people are leaving the carts these days more often, probably in a "pay it forward" attitude with all this inflation. I always get a kick out of it when someone meets me half way to the door and offers me their returned cart. I go to give them their quarter and they just smile and tell me, "Pay it forward." I simply grin and quietly think, "Yeah, right." lol

Everything has gone up out of sight. We are all having to shift and buy something else. EXCEPT for Charmin TP and Kleenex and Puffs Tissues. Those are staples in our home!

There are some things you have to sort of just "take it on the chin" with I suppose. It's a VERY short list for me, though, honestly.
