My New Phone

The moment Whatsapp alerted its users that it would stop supporting certain old digital devices by the end of 2022, I began researching for a new affordable phone. It took me a month to decide on one, another half a month to buy, and almost another month to really move my sim card to the new android phone. (I didn't touch or open the new phone for some weeks from the day I brought it home - out of loyalty to my old dear phone, also because I still could use Whatsapp there.) Harsh reality : I found out I couldn't & can't use Whatsapp on the new android phone because I refuse to agree to let it sync to my phone contact list (which is 98% full of my business contacts). For some reason, I have always used Whatsapp to contact close friends and close family members - never anyone else. So I continue using Whatsapp on my old phone. But at least I can use the new phone to do mylot from now on, how cool is that . Do you use anything similar to Whatsapp to contact your close friends & family members?

Happy new phone! Whatsapp isn’t so popular here. We use Facebook Messenger here more

My workplace dislikes FB (and I will die if all of my classmates keep contacting me - I do love my old friends, but not ALL of them .)

@YrNemo Facebook is tolerable and Messenger app is very helpful, at least in this part of the world

@YrNemo WhatsApp is where you get mail that is marked for the groups that have been created there I prefer a one on one interaction. They also keep sending videos and stuff and news which they think we should read. I have no interest in such messages.

Isn't Whatsapp similar to email/FB? I thought they were similar - but then again, I am not too good with IT stuff.

@allknowing I have been saved from that fate then (I have never received anything else from Whatsapp - but then, I use the old version, on my old phone).

I do not use Whatsapp and I send an email or call if I need to contact my family members. This is a lot more private at least.

@YrNemo - People seem not to care at all if their messages are not "private" and those companies can listen (and read) everything you say. I care.

@LadyDuck Thanks for that, I will have to be more careful from now on. (I never knew that emails are more private. Aren't I so stupid at times? No, my older brothers would say, 'no, you are wrong, you are stupid ALL THE TIME!' )

It seems as most of my close friends and family members want the ease of sending pic via Whatsapp (I am not good in this area, so I can only ponder about this preference of theirs.)

You can move your contact list onto your laptop/pc temporarily and then download them onto the SD card you'll be putting into your new phone. Agree to Whatsapp's terms. It will take any contacts on your phone and is supposed to ignore contacts on your SD card. (There are YT videos that explain how to do this.) Then you can use Whatsapp like you always have. (At least you can until the programmers working for Whatsapp fix that loophole.)

Congrats to your new android phone. WhatsApp is banned in my country. It's made by some scammers to do fraudulent activities.

Some places told me that I should hide my phone list in a note file, and only leave some important whatsapp contacts in that real phone list. But that means letting whatsapp taking over my phone, not what I want at all!

Almost everyone in my country uses WhatsApp, and even then old cellphones are starting to no longer be supported.

I think Whatsapp (like Facebook) is more convenient if you want to contact people overseas. In the same country, normal phones will be fine.

I either have to find a way to get around the new Whatsapp's rule, or get rid of it completely.

I most commonly use Facebook messenger. I have used it for some years and it allows me to stay in contact with family and friends. I also use WhatsApp very sporadically. I receive messages from businesses and other people through WhatsApp. I still need to find out about its uses but I have read that WhatsApp is a useful app
