Mixed Thoughts on Lottery

While in Florida last weekend, visiting a f-riend, we were talking about the differences in our states. We were also talking about our love for Ron Desantis and what an amazing governor he is. But that topic came up because we were comparing our states (me-Alabama, her-Florida). We got on the subject of taxes. I knew that Florida did not tax groceries, but I did not know they had no state taxes. She shared that was because of the lottery. I know there are many who want a lottery in Alabama, and I have always been against it. Supposedly, the lottery has been great for states like Georgia and Florida. But I also know it has been terrible for states like New York and New Jersey. Maybe it is how the money is managed. Maybe it is determined by politics. Maybe we don't know the truth about any of it. I just know I used to be 100% against the lottery. So much corruption, immorality, and life destruction goes along with that lifestyle. But there are many other activities that bring the same issues. Now I am, at least, willing to consider that a state lottery has its positives. I just don't know. Private gambling might be safer because anything the government touches is tainted. For now, I am still against a state lottery, but it is something I can add to my research list.

I agree that it is a good thing if that is what is actually done with the money. When we lived in New York, though, it was well-known that the money was not being used for what it was designated. A lot of politicians and special interest groups were pillaging the lottery bank. But for Georgia, I have family there and they say nothing but good things about their state lottery and how it benefits schools.

I don't care what they do with the money so long as I have a chance at winning millions. lol Pilfer it away. What the hell is the difference between them pilfering that money or any other taxes? It's ALL pilfered. lol

@porwest agreed. I think the government is laughing at us as they steal our money and pilfer it.

The fact that Florida has lottery has absolutely nothing to do with Florida not having a state tax. Lotteries do not even contribute to state budgets. Most of the funds go to schools. As for state lotteries or lotteries in general, while it's a fool's game to be sure, I don't think think they are harmful and hey, if you can blow $2 on a ticket and walk away with millions even if the odds are terribly against you? Why not. It's a free country and people should be able to spend their money however they want.

Hmmn, yeah I am 50/50 when it comes to lottery because in our country there were issues before that it is being manipulated. But maybe if they maybe more transparent on their projects and other charities then maybe my trust issues will somewhat change.
