Unique in Australia - a Checkers cab

The photo shows a 1964 Checkers cab, built by the Checker Motor Company. They were robust vehicles, popular as fleet vehicles and taxis. There were no design changes for some 20 years which meant spare parts and panels were easy to find.
The flat floor and massive space in the back made them ideal as taxis and they remain the most famous taxicab vehicle in the USA, appearing in dozens of films and TV shows.
Powered by a 4.6 litre V8 engine, this is the only Checkers cab in Australia.
In other news, we walked to the nearby oval last night and I had tempura prawns from one of the food trucks. They were yummy but occasionally some spice or other doesn’t agree with me and I itched and scratched all night. I’ve taken an antihistamine and hopefully that will take effect soon. We’re supposed to go to a concert this evening.

I remember Checker Cab!! They were green here to separate them from Yellow Cab (which were, of course, yellow). Ah, those were the days.

@JudyEv — yes, they went under a few decades ago.

I remember seeing those cabs years ago. I hope the antihistamine works so you can enjoy the concert. Does that med make you sleepy? I can hardly take them for allergies in the daytime.

@JudyEv A family of five could live in that.

This reminds me of the Hindustan Ambassador the most comfortable taxi and now not seen any more.

@JudyEv It was ranked the best taxi in the world
The Hindustan Ambassador started life in Britain as the Morris Oxford but, with a quick name change, it went on to become one of India's most enduring vehicles.

@allknowing The article says it started life as the Morris Oxford and I remember that car. Thanks for the information.

Sometimes outside food doesn't match with our system.
I hope that your condition is fine now.
The front portion of the cab is big as well.
I think it might have a powerful engine I suppose!

thank you for the picture. I remember those cabs. Was that one in the museum? Do they still use them? Sorry about the spicy food and your itching and scratching from it. Are you allergic is why you itched and scratched all night.
Did you get any sleep or were you up itching and scratching all night long?

Cool cab! One of the most famous taxi cabs produced in the United States. Checker cabs have been used in some popular movies. That particular model was used in the Bill Murray film "Scrooged" and also in the movie "Taxi Driver."
Many different models of Checkers were used throughout the decades in American films.

Now this is amazing and I have not seen one of these in many years Judy. In a photo of course. Lovely vehicles.
Hope you have fun at the concert if you do.
Sorry to hear of the spice affecting you.

I have to be careful what foods I eat because of so many allergic reactions. I'd never try eating anything from a food truck.
I hope the antihistamine works quickly.

@JudyEv My allergist has given me three allergy panels and I came up allergic to a lot of things... It just means more things I have to avoid.

Are you sure you aren't allergic to seafood? I remember the Checkers cabs well.

I haven't been allergic in the past but maybe I'm developing an allergy. The cabs are big vehicles.
