Unique in Australia - a Checkers cab

The photo shows a 1964 Checkers cab, built by the Checker Motor Company. They were robust vehicles, popular as fleet vehicles and taxis. There were no design changes for some 20 years which meant spare parts and panels were easy to find. The flat floor and massive space in the back made them ideal as taxis and they remain the most famous taxicab vehicle in the USA, appearing in dozens of films and TV shows. Powered by a 4.6 litre V8 engine, this is the only Checkers cab in Australia. In other news, we walked to the nearby oval last night and I had tempura prawns from one of the food trucks. They were yummy but occasionally some spice or other doesn’t agree with me and I itched and scratched all night. I’ve taken an antihistamine and hopefully that will take effect soon. We’re supposed to go to a concert this evening.

I remember Checker Cab!! They were green here to separate them from Yellow Cab (which were, of course, yellow). Ah, those were the days.

@JudyEv — yes, they went under a few decades ago.

I gather Checker Cabs are no more. Is that right?

I remember seeing those cabs years ago. I hope the antihistamine works so you can enjoy the concert. Does that med make you sleepy? I can hardly take them for allergies in the daytime.

It hasn't made me sleepy yet. The itching has eased so I don't think I'll need to take another.

This reminds me of the Hindustan Ambassador the most comfortable taxi and now not seen any more.

@JudyEv It was ranked the best taxi in the world
The Hindustan Ambassador started life in Britain as the Morris Oxford but, with a quick name change, it went on to become one of India's most enduring vehicles.

It's a shame when such comfortable vehicles go out of favour.

Wonder if there are any over here. Considering how often Hollywood films here, might be one or a lookalike

I've seen a lot of yellow cabs in US films but I'm not sure they were Checkers.

These are very similar to the ones used back in the day here in the States. Ever seen the show Taxi with Danny DeVito? Very funny show.

Before I read the part about being in many films I thought to myself hey those are what I usually see in movies. Oh no that’s terrible news about getting hives. I hate when that happens and we can’t pinpoint the exact cause.

I'm wondering now if I'm developing an allergy to shellfish. I hope not as I love prawns and other shellfish.

Sometimes outside food doesn't match with our system. I hope that your condition is fine now. The front portion of the cab is big as well. I think it might have a powerful engine I suppose!

I certainly remember the yellow checkered cabs in NYC. Now they use yellow SUVs. I hope you aren't allergic to shellfish. That happened to me once, but never again, thank goodness. Having it tonight.

@JudyEv They say you can develop an allergy any time. My grandson was allergic to lobster and tomatoes, but that allergy disappeared. Go figure. I hope you only had a fluke reaction as I did.

@JudyEv thank you for the picture. I remember those cabs. Was that one in the museum? Do they still use them? Sorry about the spicy food and your itching and scratching from it. Are you allergic is why you itched and scratched all night. Did you get any sleep or were you up itching and scratching all night long?

The cab was in the museum and they don't use them any more. Once I took an antihistamine, I was able to sleep. I'm almost over it now. Thanks

Cool cab! One of the most famous taxi cabs produced in the United States. Checker cabs have been used in some popular movies. That particular model was used in the Bill Murray film "Scrooged" and also in the movie "Taxi Driver." Many different models of Checkers were used throughout the decades in American films.

Almost all the cars in the museum were gleaming. And one of the volunteers was polishing one of them. I guess they have to do them all from time to time.

There would have been dozens of them at the time. It's a concert band featuring theme songs from films. I think it's a concert band. Our niece is also in a brass band so I'm not really sure.

I have to be careful what foods I eat because of so many allergic reactions. I'd never try eating anything from a food truck. I hope the antihistamine works quickly.

If you have allergies, you'd be taking a bit of a risk I guess. I only run into trouble very, very occasionally but I probably need to find out what the trouble is.
