So Daylight Savings Time is a Bad Thing?

Eugene, Oregon
March 12, 2023 3:44pm CST
In the US, at midnight on Saturday, we sprang ahead. It was suddenly 1 AM. I am always glad when that happens. When I worked, I hated coming home in darkness at 5 PM. With DST, it stays light until nearly 10 PM in mid-summer. But doctors are telling us it is an unhealthy thing to do. It increases the number of heart attacks (atrial defibrillation) they say. It interrupts our sleep patterns. I am so glad to see long light evenings. What do you think? Should we have DST year-round or deal with early darkness year round & never change the clocks?

I'd rather never change the clocks. It's pain in the tush and somebody always forgets to change their clock, leaving jobs short-staffed.

@JamesHxstatic I don't care which time we stay with, I just don't want to change time twice a year.

@DaddyEvil I agree with that. The change is a pain either way.

Strange that some people don't get the message. I'm for year round DST, I think.

I’d prefer not to change clocks twice a year. Such a pain in the bit to do so. I read today that a bunch of partisan senators introduced legislation in the Senate to make DST permanent. A representative in Congress also introduced similar legislation there. We’ll see if it makes it farther this year than last year. If you recall, the Senate approved it unanimously last year, but the House failed to take up the bill in their chamber.

@JamesHxstatic And so did many of the southern states, including Florida. Georgia just added itself to that list as well. I think it is only a matter of time before it happens.

Right, all the west coast states voted in favor of it a few years ago. As you say, "We'll see."

I like daylight savings time. When they tried DST year round in the 70's, it did not work. I don't think we should have DST year round and never change our clocks.

We voted NOT to change, the only time that a popular vote was ignored. Now we are asking at least to change once and forever, every year we know of how many more accidents on the roads we have soon after the time is changed. People are sleepy in the morning and more distracted.

@JamesHxstatic I pity all those Italian workers who must be here at 7 in the morning. They already have to get up at 6 and suddenly they will have to get up at 5. Still dark as night, they are on the road, in the dark and more sleepy.

Seems strange to me. I never had much of a reaction either way, Darkness at 5 just annoys me.

@LadyDuck That would be hard. So, many Italians cross the border daily for work?

I hate hate hate it and always have this time change. My body has a pattern of getting up in the early morning between 8 and 9 AM. This morning I got up and had a fuzzy head and wondered why and then realized it was 8:30 according to the clock but my body was still at 7:30 and it was too early to be up. Happens every year and takes me about a week to get back to normal,

We do not experience that here but when I was spending time with my niece in the US and we had gone to Canada for a couple of days she landed at an exhibition and the gates were closed. She then remembered that the clock had done the trick. It had turned back (lol)

I just know that light used to wake me and now it doesn't so I will need to set the clock to for sure get me up tomorrow morning. I have a Vet appointment for Rufus's annual checkup in Olympia.

@JamesHxstatic It's totally crazy. I drive right by another Vet but he was so nasty with my Beau Teak kitty that I ended up using a Vet in Oly. Makes me grumpy but that Vet made me even grumpier.

@JamesHxstatic actually it’s the topic of the day how the weatherman screwed up because it has been raining since last night and the temperature is down. But it’s still early morning. We don’t know later

They've given up on it here. I can see the benefit for some. I loved the long twilights in Ireland when we were there.

Daylight savings has been around for more than 50 years, here in my state of Victoria, in Australia. My Dad used to say that the hours slept before 12 midnight are the best/healthiest hours to sleep for a person, so it at least gives us all an hour more to sleep before 12 am, for most of us.

@JamesHxstatic Apparently, it started during the first world war here, in 1916, in some states of Australia too, and again it was adopted during the second world war too, to conserve power. It was only adopted here on a regular basis in my state of Victoria, in 1971, though. I think it should go all year, as we also need extra light in winter here too.

I hope that the daylight savings time stays all year round since when the sun goes down at five o'clock during the winter months, it is depressing.

Lucky here for us because we never practice that. We had that day light saving time scheme before about 40 years ago but we did it only once but our school didn't follow. I don't like messing up my body clock and I don't like that scheme.

Personally I do not distinguish between the seasons of the year. Here we are used to just saying "it's rainy season" and that's it. This beginning of the year was different. Usually January is hot. This time it was very cold.

I think we should pick one and stay there. I hate leaving for work in the dark in the morning, but I can do it. I think it is the constant changing back and forth that is so awful for us.

To me, it's about as important as women wearing light v. dark pink fingernail polish. I just roll with the punches on this one. I talked to my heart, and it said it doesn't care either. But as a child, I did hate going to bed "when it was still light out. Wah Wah.

I love more sunlight and would prefer not to have to change my clocks back and forth. The only problem I foresee is the early school bus runs. It's better for the students not to have to wait in the dark during the morning.

I like DST in the spring and fall to be able to get outside after work. Doesn't matter in the summer, we have so much daylight here. I wouldn't like it in the winter, sunrise wouldn't be until 9 am in December/January. So, changing works best for me.

In general, I don't like changing the time, after all, people used to not change their watches, they lived in harmony with nature, the movement of the sun and it was ok. Now you can do it too.
