Monday Morning to everyone. There are terrible days at work. Most of them are the Monday after the four-day Thanksgiving break, a Tuesday after a three-day weekend, and the Monday after Daylight Saving Time starts. Today’s song won’t help. Oh, it’s a great song, but why wasn’t it on the list in January? Good question. Mrs. Robinson - Simon & Garfunkel No, this wasn’t nominated for an Oscar. WHY remains one of the great mysteries of our time. Don’t go to Picky Wedia, because you’ll read the first paragraph, “The song was written specifically for the film,” and the closing line that the song wasn’t nominated because “a nominee must have been written exclusively for the film in which it appeared.” Gee, that’s US government thinking! This began life as a demo called “Mrs. Roosevelt,” and Paul Simon changed it to “Mrs. Robinson,” after Anne Bancroft’s character in the movie. I have to tell you that I finally watched this a few years ago when TCM had Oscar-nominated movies for Oscar month (it was nominated for seven Academy Awards, winning one for director Mike Nichols). That’s two hours of my life I can’t get back. I didn’t “get it.” I guess I’m not part of the target audience. The song, on the other hand? Pure classic. Mrs. Robinson Written by Paul Simon Recorded by Simon & Garfunkel From The Graduate, 1967 Any way you look at it you lose:

That interesting how the name got changed to fit the character in the movie. I thought it would be a movie I’d enjoy watching until you said you didn’t.

@shaggin — I really don’t, either, which is why I haven’t been to see a movie since 1987.

I’m just one hillbilly, but I didn’t care for it. And I like Dustin Hoffman and Anne Bancroft a lot.

Walter Brooke (who said the “Just one word - plastics” line) was in a movie that MST3K skewered, and they didn’t mention that line! I’m so disappointed in them.

Okay, then it wasn’t just me. Maybe you had to be smoking what they were smoking to “get” it. A few years ago I did a countdown of “movies I wish I hadn’t seen,” and this was one of them. The Goodbye Girl was another one in the top ten. Oh, well, maybe that’s why I watch The Godfather and Casablanca at least twice a year.

@FourWalls Our go to movies for annual watching are The Princess Bride - because, well, it's The Princess Bride, and the original Mama Mia. Both are just really good at making you feel good movies. Oh, then there's The Fifth Element my sons and I watch every June as our end of the school year movie.

I've never been interested in watching the movie, and after your review, I am glad I haven't. The song though, yes. Always loved Simon & Garfunkel's music.

When the big quote from the movie is, “Just one word….plastics!” that should give you a clue.

Coo, coo, ca-choo, what a great movie Mrs. Brooks, I mean Mrs. Bancroft, I mean Mrs. Robinson... Dustin Hoffman was such a dork in that film but he got both ladies, mother and daughter! Oh yes, the song. Another Simon & Garfunkel hit, enough said... Song trivia: this song should have gotten an Oscar nomination, but because Simon & Garfunkel never filled out the forms needed for it to be considered.

I enjoy Simon and Garfunkel a lot as well. Beautiful harmonies, and Paul Simon is such a great songwriter.
