Humbleness in Defeat

My career in pro tournament paintball over the last five years has been one of ups and downs, but overall the team has been heading in the right direction. And that's up. From my first year in the pros finishing 11th in the world standings, then 9th, 7th, 4th, and finally finishing second in the standings at last year's World Cup, we have been going nowhere but to the top. But 2nd place isn't good enough. We wanted more. In the finals of World Cup last November, we fought like dogs to unseat the most dominant team in pro paintball, a team named Dynasty (a fitting name for them, as they are truly a dynasty in the paintball world). We fell short. Don't get me wrong, we were more than ecstatic to finish as high as we did, but we worked like hell in the off-season to get even better. Because we felt we were the better team. Call it arrogance if you will. Fast-forward to the first tournament of the new year, the Sunshine State Major. A tournament in our backyard. A chance for the home team to shine. A chance to prove we are the best. And dominate we did, easily cruising through the brackets and finding ourselves in very familiar ground...in the finals against Dynasty, a rematch of last year's World Cup final. This time, we were going to take them down, and establish ourselves as the new king in paintball. And fight to the end we did. But it was all for naught. We lost. Once again. Second place. And it was my fault. I blew it. As the final seconds ticked away on the clock, I had a chance to make a very risky move on the field that--if successful--would have won us the game and the match and crowned us as champions. But sometimes life throws us lemons. I made the risky move. I executed it perfectly. I made the kills I had to make. The victory was in our hands. I had a straight line up the field unabated to hit the buzzer and win the tournament. But as I jumped up and spun to make the move, I heard a snap, and down I went, in agonizing pain. As I laid there on the field, the enemy closed in and took me out. Game over. A broken right foot. Just like that. Out of the blue. And I was done. I let my team down. I was angry, hurt, frustrated, disappointed. I had that win right there in my hands. But there is humbleness in defeat. I look back now and realize that both myself and my team were getting more cocky and arrogant with each passing victory throughout the weekend. So we deserved that loss. No. We needed that loss. Because it humbled us. It humbled me. But it's going to feed us and drive us and help us to get even better and move forward. Humbly. And although the saying goes, "humble in victory, gracious in defeat," we needed to be humbled in defeat, and that's exactly what happened to us. But we're going to be a better team because of it. But not a cocky team. Because that's not who we are. I've got 4-6 weeks of healing and rehabilitation on my broken foot. And 8 weeks to the next tournament. I will be healed. I will be better. I will be ready. And I will be gracious and humble. Because last weekend, the better team won. And that team was not us. Photo is me in that last game of the tournament, limping off the field with my pride hurting much more than my broken foot.

Ouch! I’m not as sorry you lost as I am that you broke your foot! I hope you heal quickly and completely! (Stay off the roller coasters in Disney World to help you heal faster. )

@moffittjc — you have a point there. And, at least, you’ll get good care there if you get hurt (more).

No way! I’ll be back at Disney World on Friday for St Patrick’s Day! Drinking all day and hobbling around a theme park on crutches…what could possibly go wrong?

Ohhh, I’m so sorry I wish you guys could have won first place, to come so close and break your foot. It’s heartbreaking. I feel for you and the team. Take good care of that foot.

Thanks Ruby. I know my foot will heal, and I’m confident we’ll win win of our tournaments this year. We did win one last season and came in second twice, so that’s nothing to complain about.

Breaking a bone is never a good thing, especially when you hear the snap. Or when you tear a tendon or ligament and you hear the pop. I was like, "oh, that can't be good."

@Fa_Maverick And that is pretty much what happened. After my first thought, my second thought was that I was a sitting duck and was going to get lit up by enemy paintballs. Sure enough, that's what happened (see photo).

Even though I am so sorry to hear about your foot, I want to say I loved that you shared your positive perspective in your post, and focused on that. I think you actually did win, with your realization and your attitude about it all. Treat yourself well. I've broken the same foot 3 times over the years, and it's not fun. Just don't run any races, please!!

Thanks for your words of encouragement. I do try to keep a positive perspective about everything, even though I’m fallible and prone to negative feelings just like anyone else. But I try to see the best in everything. Funny you mentioned running races, because just last night I registered for an upcoming Disney 5k race at Magic Kingdom (the race is after my foot heals of course).

Send it in somewhere, it's worth a second look. I would imagine there are people from all walks of life who would really benefit and appreciate your little story, Jeff.

Oh gosh. Physical injuries hurt, but so do bruises to the ego. I know that too well from figure skating long ago . . . you win some, you lose some, and that's the way it goes. I've seen that arrogance eventually bite people in the butt. But you are a such a good sport . . . you are so right about being gracious in defeat. I do think it could give you renewed motivation and make you/your team even stronger. I hope your foot has a speedy recovery and you get back out there soon!!

Yeah, it took me a few days to get over it, but I'm good now. It's all water under the bridge, as they say. I just hate that I let my team down when I could have lifted them up to the top. But we all know it was an accident. I know there be more chances to make up for it in the future. And besides, to start the season at number 2 in the world standings is not a bad place to be at all. lol

A great lesson for all, that sometimes when you lose you win. It's what you gain from the loss that matters more than the loss itself. I recall that fish farm in Hainan, China that I lost my butt on in the stock market. And another Chinese company, Velatel, that was one of the worst investment decisions I ever made—what I gained from the losses was a deep understanding of how I went wrong. What details I missed or overlooked. Life is often full of things that are not truly failures or losses or even mistakes necessarily. Life is full of opportunities to make ourselves better, so long as we are honest with ourselves and are willing to do the analysis to open wide the door of discovery. As for the foot...OOOOUUUUCCCCHHHH!

It’s one of those sports that people either love or hate. I used to ref recreational paintball games at a field near the University of Florida, and we’d get a lot of fraternity and sorority members who would come out and play. They’d be acting like it was easy and fun, and then I’d tell them to come over to the competitive field and let them see how real paintball is played. Most of them would freak out when they saw us play at the competitive level.

I'm sorry that your team didn't win as it should have. It wasn't your fault though. Don't take that guilt on. I coached high school field hockey and lacrosse for many years. I'm not super competitive. Of course I coached the girls and wanted to win but I was never angry if we lost. (there were challenges that I can expound on in a different post) I was always happy with and proud of my team if they used the skills I taught them and if they gave their best effort. I was never mad at students if they didn't win the game. My mindset is "do your best and exhibit good sportsmanship". My sister, on the other hand was nuts when she coached MIDDLE SCHOOL field hockey. She is competitive as hell. Her team won every game for years. One day her team TIED and she refused to let the players enjoy the candy and snacks that parents brought for the girls to have after the game. She said "we don't celebrate ties!" I straight up told her that she was nuts.

I am super competitive, but I'm not ugly about it. I can accept defeat, and acknowledge when another team is better. But as a player, sometimes arrogance can creep in, and is not necessarily always recognizable in the moment. I think that's what happened to us out there. We're not a cocky team by nature, but winning feels oh so good! lol. We just needed a reality check. I just wish it would have come in a different form other than a broken foot.

@NJChicaa As competitive as I was, it was never about winning or losing for me in sports. It was about doing the absolute best I could, playing against the absolute best my opponent could throw at me. If we both did our absolute best, then I could accept defeat knowing I just wasn't the better player that time around.

@moffittjc Well you have recognized that weakness and will address it in the future. Obviously you've had a lot of success. I honestly don't get the super competitiveness. I was a high school athlete who even earned all-county honors. But winning and losing just isn't the main goal in my life. As long as you effing do your best and act honorably then I'm proud of you.
