The weather doesn’t want to know what to do. Ten minutes ago the sun was shining, then it was snowing, and now the sun is shining again. Oh, well. I’ll sip some hot tea and give you another song that was used in a movie. Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley & His Comets What about it, Daddy Evil? Four in a row???? Here’s some completely worthless trivia for you: Kris Kristofferson once said his favorite version of “Me and Bobbie McGee” was by none other than… Bill Haley! But that has nothing to do with this. “Rock Around the Clock” wasn’t an original song by the time Bill Haley recorded it. It was originally recorded in 1952. Haley’s rendition was released in 1954. Then came Blackboard Jungle. It was one of those movies that dealt with classroom rebellion in a real way. It’s well known for that. It was also the first movie to use rock and roll for the soundtrack. Oh, and there were two actors who made their mark in this film: Sidney Poitier and Jamie Farr. The use of “Rock Around the Clock” in such a serious, “adult” film was a signal that rock wasn’t a passing fad, even though it was still very young at this point. It made a great song into a legendary classic. A lot different use in this film than in the sweet innocence of Happy Days, where it served as the opening theme for the first two seasons, wouldn’t you say? Rock Around the Clock Written by Max Freedman and Jimmy DeKnight Recorded by Bill Haley & His Comets From Blackboard Jungle, 1955 Put your glad rags on:

Too much to ask for. Three in a row was amazing in and of itself!

I didn’t know there was more than one version of Me and Bobby McGee. Janis Joplins always gave me the chills. I love it. The buddy holly song I discovered in 1999 when we got a computer and internet and that song was on encarta I think it was.

@Tampa_girl7 — the old black label RCA Victor 45s! (With Nipper the dog and “his master’s voice” on them.) Not that I’d look at all the 45s and memorize the labels when I was little or anything….

@FourWalls When i can get a look at my 45’s I’ll let you know. I haven’t played them in awhile. She had a nice collection. My favorites are her Elvis ones.

Love the song, never heard of the movie. This seems to be my theme with this countdown. I know one but not the other

Hard to recognize him without a dress, I know. He was 20 when he made that movie.

@FourWalls Or at least it's hard to recognize him when he's 20 years younger than he was in M*A*S*H.

When I was a teen, no matter what the year, parties HAD TO HAVE bill Haley´s version of this perfect song in the party. It broke the ice with those first notes and words. I loved it and love it. I had the record in 45.

Never saw the movie but always loved this song. In my young adulthood it seemed I was really rocking around the clock and remember stumbling to work as the sun rose over the skyscrapers in NYC having just stopped dancing perhaps a short four hours ago,

A very big tune I think and a good one. I had forgotten that it was ever the opener for Happy Days.

After the first two seasons they went to the Pratt & McClain song as a theme. I don’t know if royalties or the possibility of syndication had anything to do with it (allegedly that’s what doomed the release of WKRP in Cincinnati, the royalties for the songs used in the show ).

I love this song. Never heard of the movie. In fact, we have a Chinese version of this song which was quite popular.

The movie is probably better remembered for Sidney Poitier’s breakthrough and for this song than the actual movie.

It really didn’t have to be used anywhere to be remembered, as far as I’m concerned. I think the inclusion on Happy Days just added to the song’s legacy.
