Our high school reunion is over

We attended a High School reunion yesterday for my former classmates. I went to a state-run school but Vince went to a convent school and, being a year younger, was a year behind me. However, the convent only went to 3rd year high school so many students went to the State high school after Year 7 and a few more transferred after 3rd year. By all of that, I’m trying to say that Vince knows a great many of my high school buddies so it was pretty much a reunion for both of us. We went to a heritage-listed hotel at Quindanning. Some arrived in time for lunch which we ate on the verandah and a few more joined us in the evening for dinner which was roast beef followed by cheesecake and cream. As we are all around 76 years old, we're now going to meet every twelve months. The photo is of the door into one of the ladies’ bathrooms. I’m sorry about the quality. It says ‘Bath 25c, soap extra’.

That would be an old sign... I'm sure the water costs more than 25 cents... I've never been to one of my high school reunions. I was never interested in seeing most of the people I went to school with.

I can understand this - not necessarily wanting to meet old classmates but thankfully we've all matured and now get along fine.

@JudyEv I've seen a very few of them, the ones I did like, over the years when we were shopping and ran into each other. Most of them had to introduce themselves as I didn't recognize them. One funny, to me, thing I noticed right away is that they had white hair while mine is still auburn. (That is not a joke. One of my classmates asked me how often I dye my hair because it's still the same color it was in school. When Pretty answered that I don't dye it, he asked if she was my wife. When she said she was my daughter, he looked startled and left me alone.)

@DaddyEvil There were some at the first reunion that looked totally different and it was hard for a while to actually relate to them. And there were some that I had absolutely no recollection of. Most say that I haven't changed much at all but certainly my hair is getting more grey.

I can understand that. The first one can be a bit tense in some ways but since then there is a core group who enjoy meeting every year or two.

I love your sign. I need one. You make me almost want to go to a reunion- you know I'm joking?

It seems many have no wish to meet old classmates. I can understand that really but it's surprising how, as adults most are quite bearable.

Hmm how come every 12 years and not every 10? I went to my 10 year one but they didn’t do 20 due to coronavirus. I’m glad Vince knew and enjoyed seeing people there too that certainty kept it from being boring for him.

@JudyEv oh my gosh I thought it said 12 years. That’s so neat you plan to all meet up once a year now. That’s a fantastic idea. I wonder if they do that here when people get older. I guess I will find out when my parents have another one.

It's every 12 months from now on as we're all getting older. We missed during covid too.

It was just our year group but it was more enjoyable I think than a bigger reunion.

Many of those at the convent were children of immigrants and knew little or no English before they went to school. They have all done so well. I hope, and I'm sure they are, very grateful to their parents for taking the huge step of coming to Australia to start a new life.

I have only been once to a class reunion, two years after we were out of college. As I moved to another country soon after I got married, I have lost contact with all my classmates.

@JudyEv When we were young, we had no smartphones and social media. When someone moved to another city or another country we lost contact.

@LadyDuck When a reunion was first put forward, there was a lot of emails, etc trying to find the whereabouts of this one and that one.

I think there have been a couple of re-unions of my old school - at least I know there was one after ten years and I think there might have been another. I have avoided anything like that like the plague!

Fair enough and I can understand. The first couple I found pretty stressful but there is a core group now that I enjoy meeting up with every few years. The obnoxious seem less so now - mostly.

My husband is going for his college reunion this Thursday. They missed their 25 years Silver Jubilee reunion in 2020 due to the pandemic. So, they are having it now. He will be gone from Thursday till the weekend. They have planned three days of fun filled activities. I badly want to go for a reunion and have started talking to my old friends regarding this. Hope that it happens soon.

@arunima25 This has been done ourselves and is just for those of us who started high school in 1959 (I think). So it's just the one year group.

@JudyEv Spouses and family are also invited. But I can't miss the school as it's last working day. Our college doesn't sponsor and organizes a reunion. We have to discuss and do it ourselves. Our 25 years would be next year.

I didn't go to my high school reunion. I think it was held 11 years after it was no longer a high school but a middle school. Not that I cared to relive those days, anyway.

My old school was turned into a training college for Salvation army officers, so no chance of us going back there anymore. I am in two minds about wanting to do so, or not, anyway. Some like to meet former schoolmates, I would rather not do so. You have known Vince for a long time then, if you both went to the same school together.

We haven't gone back to our old school, only to visit. We meet elsewhere. Vince stayed at the convent school and I went to the State school so we didn't know each other until in our late teens.
