That was harder than I expected!

This morning I set out to do a couple of errands. I decided I would go first thing, right after going to school with Little One, partly because it was forecast to rain later, but mainly because I knew that if I didn’t I would sit down, read emails, potter about on here, have another coffee, then think I had better do some work first… and before I knew it it would be mid afternoon! So off I went on my bicycle; it was a beautiful morning. I cycled along the river, over the lock, through the next village and then stopped at the shopping centre to pick up a few things – a little bit of corn for the chickens and Easter eggs for the school fund-raising tombola. But of course, as usual, I saw more things that I needed. And they were all heavy things! First I found the corn, but only 5 kg sacks were available. Then I picked up a 4 kg sack of peanuts for the birds in the garden. Then another pack of mixed bird seed – that was 1.7 kg. Then I thought I might as well have a few more seed potatoes, that was another 2 kg. Then I found a large carton of milk reduced. We get through a lot of milk so I figured we may as well have that. That was 6 pints (3.4 L, so about 3.4 kg). On top of that I bought a couple of Easter eggs, some smaller packs of chocolate, a couple of packs of seeds and some toiletries. Then I was also carrying my water bottle and the lock for my bike, which is reasonably heavy. So I ended up cycling the 4 miles or so home with about 20 kg (44 lbs) strapped into my bicycle baskets – and on top of that it’s really windy today and although the wind is warm and pleasant, I was cycling right into it most of the way home! At least I definitely got some exercise today! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

@DaddyEvil Some, although we don't see much of each other as we each cover one stretch of the road, and if there are toads about we're too busy running after them to stop and chat!

Thanks. I feel like I've earned a sit down. Although I have just volunteered for toad patrol.

I love how you did this all on your bike ! I have a bike but all the shops I need to go to are way too far . . . plus I don't have baskets. Was it hard for you to steer? You are super woman !

@Fleura Oh, I imagine it's sort of a balancing act! Were your legs and arms ok after that?

Ha ha thanks! I have to be careful to put the really heavy stuff in the basket at the back and only lighter things in the front otherwise it does get very unstable.

You must have been tired after reaching home. 20 kg load is too much for a cyclist to pedal against the direction of wind.

It was rather more than I would normally carry. I felt like I had earned a rest after that!

I wonder how you could put 20 Kg of things on inside your bicycle baskets. I hope the road was not uphill coming back home.

It's surprising how much you can fit. And yes some parts were uphill - although not big hills - but I walked up the worst bit, I was rather tired by then!

That sounds like a feat but the heavy load might have helped anchor you against the wind too

It's surprising how weighty groceries can get when you just keep adding bits and pieces. At least you've had your workout for the day.
