I went to church today and the preacher was like; For God to bless you you must work for the blessing. He continued saying Jacob and his mother prepared a nice meal for Isaac to bless Jacob. Though the blessing was for Esau but Jacob took it from Isaac through lies, but he worked for it.. what's your take.....

Actually, Esau should not have gone to get the blessing. He had, earlier, sold his birthright for a bowl of lentil stew. If you think that doesn't matter, you have to consider the reason he 'sold' it and the reason why his brother, Jacob, asked for it for such a paltry price. Esau was not a man of spiritual depth - he was not concerned about the implications of his rash decisions - he wanted to be fed, 'now'. He put more importance on immediate gratification than on the outworkings of God's purpose or of being a means to bring that purpose about. Jacob knew the importance of the birthright. Gaining it had little to do with material wealth, in his mind. He wanted to be part of the promise made to Abraham, then Isaac. He recognized the importance of that blessing and knew his brother had little interest in it.

@Maxveg When it comes to the Bible, it is important that we continue to learn. Jesus said: 'This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.' Paul wrote about why the Bible was produced: 'For all the things that were written beforehand were written for our instruction, so that through our endurance and through the comfort from the Scriptures we might have hope.' It is much more than just a collection of life accounts and events - we need to get a clear understanding of the people and events in the Bible and reason on what these things teach us because of what it can mean to our lives.

@sulynsi you're right, tithing and offerings are written in the Bible but does God promise material riches the way we're being tought by our current preachers? They will tell you as a congregant that the pastor needs a new car, a mansion. So they want you to contribute towards it telling you God will bless you abundantly.
