I finally saw a plane land there

So, as many years as I have been here, I have never seen any planes at the small "airport" that is located on the highway a few miles away. There is a larger airport located in the county seat that has a number of runways and could probably accommodate a moderate sized plane. This place is just a strip with a building or two and possibly a hangar. I have driven up there and not seen much though. I saw a plane landing on the strip today though...that was a decent sized one. It would probably accommodate six people. I thought it was cool. I have seen planes that I thought were headed for that strip or that probably took off from there, but this was the first time I saw actual evidence of it being used. Do you have any mini airports around where you live?

I've been told my hometown of St. Augustine has one, but everytime I've ever flown, it's either been out of Jax, or Daytona international.

Oh I am sure St. Augustine is big enough for a small airport. This place is no more than one air strip, but I guess if it got busy they could add more. They have space to do so.

@snowy22315 Who knows, but you saw that it's at least somewhat active. And not abandoned.

@kaylachan Yeah, I guess planes must use it from time to time.

I lived half my life travelling on planes.
No mini airports near here, just the big award winning DIA.

DIA? Dallas International? I changed planes there a couple of times flying back and forth to Alaska..I didn't get to see much of it, it was mostly chasing after the next plane. Pittsburgh has a really nice airport. Lots of good shopping there.

@RebeccasFarm Ohhh, OK. What has it won awards for? My sister has probably been there. She was in Denver on business several years ago. She got me some cool souvenirs.

There was a major CW star who came here to perform after the earthquake in 2011. He may have flown into the one in town with a larger private plane, or maybe he flew into Richmond or Charlottesville and hired a limo to take him here, I don't know. Lots of times they take a bus too with their equipment.

@LadyDuck They may have expanded it since you have been there. The airport in my hometown is quite small ,for a city of its size, but they seem to have a decent amount of flights. They will not take international flights although it is labeled as an international airport.

@snowy22315 I just checked online and I noticed that there are commercial regular flights, the planes can transport up to 30 people, so it's not as small as I thought.

Hard to say...I am kind of surprised the one in the county seat is as big as it is..seems like overkill for a small town.

@snowy22315 It might seem like overkill until an emergency happens and that airport is the best way to get people where they need to go.

This one allows small planes to land, but the one I saw today as I said was not terribly small. It looked like 6 passengers could ride in it.

We have one and my old dog used to race them, talk about seeing something that makes you feel so free. They actually have a bar in the hanger and place is quite popular but long drive home if had one to many, why I never go there. lol

I am not sure there is a hangar there really..I have just seen like some old building probably has navigational or weather equipment. One of my apps says there is a gas station there, but like I said...it doesn't appear to be anything much up there at all If there is anything else, it is well hidden.

Small is the word here,,,what is funny is that they have signs on the road directing to this "airport" like people actually use it. I don't get it...honestly. I guess maybe if someone was picking somebody up they might need to use those signs..but honestly, how often is that going to happen? It isn't like they can be seen from the air to direct planes there or something.

We haven't any mini-airports near us that I know of. There is one near the sailing camp my sons attended when they were teenagers. In my hometown of Wilmington, there is now an exclusive neighborhood that boasts its own private airstrip where people can keep their plane at their house and fly in and out whenever they want.

There are some aquatic planes here, although typically they stay on the water, some of them can use a runway. Somebody in this neighborhood has one or rented one or something. I saw it land near their pier. It was going back and forth over the lake.

You must hear planes all the time. It sounds as though you are very close.

I see them fairly often in the summer. Sometimes I just hear them. Boats and jetskis are a lot more common though.
