The Household Defender

The next door neighbors have a young dog at their house occasionally. He belongs to the stepdaughter, and he is untrained. He will not come to Bob or I, but when our back is turned he sneaks up on us. It makes me uneasy. Bruno is an indoor cat only, but he seems to have good instincts. He watched Bob yesterday as Bob went out to get the mail. The dog was there. Bob tried to call him, as he was sort of charging at him. Bruno stood on his back legs to look out the window and made sort of aggressive sounds as well as chattering or barking in a cat version at the dog because he was after Bob. Bruno is a big boy, but only about half the size of the dog. I do not know if he could defend himself if caught. I know he is too heavy and awkward to climb a tree. He does not like strange animals in our yard.

He is very protective. Also bossy. He tells me when to go to bed at night.

If you don't trust the dog, tell the neighbor to keep him in his own yard... If one of you get hurt, suing the guy won't cover the pain and suffering.

They do not have a fence and the dog actually only comes when the step daughter is there as it is her dog.

@GardenGerty Oh, then if the dog is loose with nobody supervising him, I'd call the dog pound. I'm not nice when Pretty or I could get hurt.

They need to keep the dog on their property.

Very few people do that. They just laugh and say "oh, he won't hurt you". But when I am out I carry a big stick because he is sneaky.

You might be amazed at what that dog would do when faced with your cat. I had a dog a number of years ago that I left with a friend who had cats. My big dog was cowed by that little cat.

I have seen Bruno in action, once when I walked in an area that had the aroma of a wild animal, probably a fox. This is when he was with my sister. He howled and got so mad at me and tried to attack me. I know he is a big good boy.

A dog like that would make be very uneasy. I'm not all that fond of dogs until I get to know them. It's interesting that Bruno was reacting that way.

The dog does concern me. I became anxious when I would be in my yard, because he would sneak up.

@JudyEv I have not heard of him biting anyone, but I do not want to give him a chance.

Cats can be territorial I think. I hope your neighbor can deal with the aggression. We also have five neighbor dogs who come here looking for food and water.

Right now my cats stay inside. I wish they would keep the dog on a leash or build him a fence.

Cats could be smart. I witnessed one cat and dog fight and the cat won and was able to scare the dog. Sometimes smartness can win over brawn. I once have a dog and three cats and they get along pretty well now. I hope eventually Bruno and the dog would become friends.

I want my neighbor to keep the dog to themselves. I have been keeping Bruno in.

They need to get rid of their dog or send it to training school. Some people just don't care enough for their pets to do what is best for them. Sounds like he needs a big place to run to get that energy level down.

There is a big place to run, just across the road. He needs to be trained, and he needs to be kept on a leash or chain.
