Well howdy! It’s time for another song from another movie. I find these songs terrific but they were never nominated for an Oscar…most of them due to the fact that they weren’t “original.” This song is also in that category. Here’s today’s tune.
#3: Down to the River to Pray - Alison Krauss
I am a sucker for harmonies, bluegrass gospel, and a cappella singing. And waddayaknow, here’s all three in one song!!
O Brother, Where Art Thou? has a soundtrack that I loved a whole lot more than the movie. The movie’s enjoyable, light fare; however, that soundtrack just blows everything out of the water.
A lot of people agreed. It’s one of the biggest selling bluegrass albums in history and one of the biggest selling soundtrack albums of all time (it’s sold more than Frozen, if that gives any comfort to the parents who have to listen to those songs nonstop ). It briefly sparked a resurgence of traditional country music (this was the same year that George Strait and Alan Jackson covered Larry Cordle’s “Murder on Music Row”).
Alison Krauss is a legend, one of the very few modern bluegrass performers widely known outside of bluegrass. Those albums she made with Robert Plant (yes, that Robert Plant) didn’t hurt her popularity!
This song always gets more than one play when it pops up on the iPod.

Amazing music. And every song was 80 years old, or older!

I haven't seen that movie for a long time, but I do remember it had some good tunes. This being one. Mostly, I remember the theme song.

With all of the electronic instruments out there, nothing can beat the beauty of the human voice as an instrument.
