Yes, mylotters. Exactly like you are reading, I am starting to darn socks. In the year of 2023, there´s still someone who darns socks instead of throwing them away and get others.
Yet it is easy to explain. The socks I´m darning are hand knitted with alpaca wool by the aymara natives of the Andes. They don´t have any border that will hurt my legs and they are extremely warm.
But I bought them 20 years ago and I have been wearing them every night during the winter for the past 20 years. And when I want to pee in the middle of the night, I get up asleep and walk to the bathroom with my socks on, no slippers. So, every year, when the nights get colder, I take a big darning needdle and some alpaca wool that my mother gave me once, many years ago.
I have tried to look for the smae socks to buy. As the wool my mom gave me is not the color of the socks, they are hideous. But I should not call them hideous really. They are the warmest socks in the world. Even a queen would envy them.
I don´t want holes in the socks as the floor is cold. Don´t you think that it is worth it? I have 3 pairs and I love them.
I found the picture online but mine were very similar when they were new

This alpaca wool is the most wonderful wool there is. It is soft yet so warm.

@velvet53 I checked online when I wanted a picture and there is a place and they will send it to the US. The shipping might be expensive though.

As long as they keep your feet warm, it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about them.

I wash these socks by hand with cold water. I don´t mind if they have seen better days.

@marguicha - Pure wool in the washing machine is never a good idea.

It could be worth it. The socks I have are not worth saving
I just looked and can find alpaca wool socks on Amazon if you want to check there

There are alpaca socks there but not at the price I bought them many years ago. I had gone to the far north and there was a tour to the highest lake there. In the middle of the trip there were Aymara natives selling socks and gloves that they had knitted with the wool of their own alpacas. They were very inexpensive.

@wolfgirl569 Amazon with make its own profit. I don´t think that any of that goes to the natives.

Both my grandmothers darned socks, and I learned as a child. I usually wear socks of wool in the winter and they are very pricey. Worth darning, for sure. Of course, eventually they do wear thin, but it takes years. It's not hard to darn socks, and people throw way, way too much away, anyway.
I used to work with a gal that tossed out clothing if a button fell off! Seriously, sew it back on! I even made my boys know how to sew on a button when they left home--and there was a time or two that they had to do that.

@MarieCoyle I have even shared buttons with my children many times. And I don´t have threads of many colors because my own daughters have taken them away little by little.

I totally agree with you! I have had to change all the buttons in an old blouse that had "old" buttons but the blouse was perfectly fine

Often, I am simply amazed at the waste people create out of pure laziness. I've done the same. My grandmother's old button collection I have here has come in very handy many, many times.

Here it's so cold that I had to wear socks. I used to roll over my bed every night due to cold feet. The pairs are so cute!

The socks I have are the only ones that won´t hurt my legs as they are not tight.

Well, if they can be darned then do it. I only throw things when they are really unfixable. . I can save money too when I do that. One more thing, your socks mean a lot to you, so you do you. Don't be bothered with what others say, as long as you're not harming anyone. Take care.

These are the only socks that don´t hurt my feet so they are priceless. But I never darned my husband´s socks and they were very expensive. He would not have worn them because, as he was a pro soccer player, he took great care of his feet.

My mother knitted all her sweaters and she always bought the very best wool. She gave me the scraps to darn my socks.

I don't blame you for wanting to keep your socks in repair. I haven't darned socks in decades.

When my husband was alive, I had to buy the most expensive socks for him as he was then a pro soccer player and took great care of his socks and shoes. He was not picky about the rest of his clothes though.
