Just a Dragon and His Log

Last month I bought five pounds of bulk cork rounds for my reptiles. I didn't request any specific pieces, so I got what the folks at Pangaea picked out for me: four nice big pieces that could totally be termed logs. I've used two so far. One went into the enclosure I'm putting together for Mango, the sticky-footed menace. The other I gave to Vrtra, our rescue beardie, on a whim. He wasn't sure what to think of it at first, but after a few days he warmed up to it. Now it's pretty much his favorite thing ever. He started off by running over and around and through it... and then he realized that he can move it around the enclosure. What's gotten to me is the fact that he seems to be deliberately riding it around--he'll maneuver it over to the hot side under the lights in the morning, and later in the day he takes it back over to the cool side and settles in over there for the night.

Hey even reptiles want to have fun! That's interesting that the log acts like a transportable bed. Sounds like that log is being used as a temperature regulator for the Dragon.

It's funny because they really do play when the opportunity arises. Even the wild lizards that hang out on our patio will play with each other. I even see them frolicking in the rain on occasion.

I was going to ask what bull cork was but it seems it's a piece of timber for your reptiles. Is that right?

It is! It's pieces of bark from the cork tree, which are lightweight compared to their size. The company I bought from sells them for reptiles, and they offer pieces either individually or in bulk lots like the one I bought.

I had no idea they will actually move around their furniture . He seems to be aware of how to manipulate his environment to make the best of the temp situation. That's pretty smart !

@yukimori Whatever they are doing, it does seem to be intentional. That makes me have more respect for our reptilian friends! Oh those mudskippers - pretty trippy! There's so much we as humans cannot understand about some of nature's creatures . . . sometimes I am the one who feels so dumb .

I've never seen them do it before, although now I'm wondering about the fact that our other beardie Waffle pretty consistently gets one specific side of his seagrass hammock off of its hook so it dangles in a different direction. Beardies have a reputation for being dumb lizards. I really think it's just a matter of them having a different sort of intelligence than we do. Can't evaluate a fish fairly on its ability to climb a tree and all...

Yeah, the poor thing has had to endure us rearranging almost all of the furniture downstairs a couple times now... can't blame him for deciding to take control of what he can.

@yukimori Oh, wow! We leave furniture in the same place for years... Since my eyes swell closed, I need stuff to stay in one place so I don't trip myself trying to move around in the house.
