Paid to do nothing!

A couple of months ago I saw an advert for ‘events staff’ and I thought ‘I can do that’ – basically getting paid for things I often do voluntarily such as stewarding at the theatre or at music events. So I signed up and so far have been to a few interesting places where I have shown people to their seats or served food or even been on a photo shoot. This week was possibly the most interesting so far. It was a conference on sustainable finance which I think was laid on for investors by a Swiss bank. It was held in a stunning mediaeval building and featured some very well-known and eminent specialists talking about the circular economy, the future of food and how to achieve ‘net zero’ carbon emissions, subjects which I am very interested in. I can’t get my head around how much it must have cost as the room hire alone was more than ten thousand pounds, plus hire of chairs, audio-visual equipment (all separate), plus catering. Plus of course staff like me. And all I had to do was open the door occasionally and point people to the toilets when required. In fact for the first hour and a half I didn’t have anything to do at all except chat to my co-worker! I got to listen to the talks for free and in between I read my book. I’m going to be looking out for what other events I can sign up for now! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

Yes it certainly was easy. It could have been boring but I was lucky that it was something I was interested in.

You were paid and you could also listened to a conference that was surely not free. This is an interesting job.

@Fleura - I often find those conferences "boring", but there is something to learn.

@LadyDuck yes I do often find it hard to stay attentive (and even awake!) for a lengthy talk, but these were particularly interesting to me.

Indeed, I would never access such events otherwise!

I kind of like a job like that because you can still get the chance to talk with other people

Yes, a lot of people who do this work do it as a sideline but enjoy meeting other people.

It sure was. The only downside was having to get up extra early, partly because they accidentally told us the wrong time!

Oh wow!! How great that must have been. I hope you find more interesting events to do nothing (or very little) at.

I have been to a few other events that could have been interesting, but were not that great (for example an interview with a crime writer who was obviously well-known to the audience, but I had never heard of him or read any of his books!)

@Fleura On those occasions, you just have to give a big sigh and think of the money.

Sounds like money for old rope. Have to say that is a magnificent building. Hopefully, with a good reputation you'll be asked to came back instead of having to apply

It really was! The person in charge told us 'The talks probably won't be interesting to you' but in fact they were right up my street, so that was a bonus!

@Fleura I like things like that, a good speaker can make even dull subjects interesting and finance is pretty interesting

Living the life! And incidentally, the radio is now playing Billie Holiday singing "Nice work if you can get it."

That event sounded exciting. I'm glad you signed up for the opportunity. I hope you get more assignments like that.
