A World War II look-out post on Downpatrick Head, Ireland

I wrote about the World War II stone markers on Downpatrick Head in Ireland. On the same headland is a lookout post. The head itself juts into the Atlantic Ocean from the north coast of County Mayo, Ireland. During World War II, Ireland remained a neutral country although some Irish did fight with Britain. Between 1939 and 1942, a series of lookout posts (LOP) were erected around the coastline and were manned throughout the war. These were all built to the same plan and were connected by phone. It was the duty of those stationed at the LOP to monitor and report all sea traffic. It would have been a bleak place on a cold, windy day. The hut is tiny but did have an alcove for an open fire. The top of the Dun Briste sea stack can be seen in the background.

That's nice to know. If you look at it now, it looks like an isolated hut in the middle of nowhere

That's true and it is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

That must have been a grim occupation, staring at the sea for hours in the biting wind with nothing at all happening most of the time. Incidentally I just happened upon another banned term I had never heard of. When I tried to describe the job as grim I was told I could not post the words 'rim' followed by 'job' !

Poor old myLot must have really gone out of its way to find some of these terms! I'm continually learning new terms here too. Sp*ck was one but it was explained to me by an American member.

There is a village not TOO far away. I guess it was there during the war years.

Do you know if Germany ever attacked Ireland at all, or did they respect their neutrality?

@JudyEv I’m sure that the Irish still had their hands full guarding their coastline to prevent a German attack on the UK through Ireland.

Fleur put a link to an auction of papers that showed the Hitler was planning an attack on Ireland but nothing eventuated. A lot of Irish did go to fight alongside the English.

It's a pretty place, but it must have been a lonely place to keep watch alone.

I'm surprised that these LOPs still exist.

They had to be built very solidly or they wouldn't withstand the strong winds.

We don't seem to learn from the past. Wars are still being fought all over the world.

This all happened during WWII. The men might have been stationed in the nearby town and would take shifts in the outpost.
