Where did the money go?

Early in the "Covid Era," a local music venue in Martinez CA was forced to close down. It was called Armando's. I will attach a photo of me and my friend Tom (to my left) performing there as "Them Boys Ain't Right." We are backed by the "house band." During Covid, several local musicians put together weekly "online concerts" to get Armando's going again once Covid subsided. I was among those musicians. We raised money through local sponsors, and through donations folks could make when they watched our online concerts. Now that Covid is (largely) behind us, I have to wonder: Where did the money go? So far as I know, Armando's is still closed, though several other venues in Martinez have reopened. The money we raised is "somewhere," though I have no idea where. My friend Mike, who records my YouTube videos and plays with me in several bands, also contributed music. Have you ever been a part of a "worthy cause" and wondered where the money ultimately went? Happily for me, all I donated was gas money (to record at Mike's house), time, and of course my incredible musical talent. Do you ever donate to charities? I donate to public radio stations, but that's it. I have done a lot of volunteering, though. Have you ever had to wonder: Where did the money go that I helped raise?

My sob story: after one of the bad tornado outbreaks I gave some money to the Salvation Army. For YEARS afterwards, I was bombarded by 2-3 letters a WEEK asking for more money. I finally wrote them and told them if they’d stop sending me stuff they wouldn’t need any fundraisers for a year. Haven’t given them a penny since.

When I lived in the US I contributed to some charities there. They obviously passed on my details to other organisations who in turn passed them on... after a couple of years I was receiving begging letters from more than 90 charities espousing all sorts of causes! The funniest ones were from political groups opposing immigration and addressing me as 'fellow American' - I had to write back and tell them I was a 'non-resident alien'

@Fleura Nothing more heart-warming than begging bots. I haven't gotten any addressed to "Fellow Conservative" from Donald Trump recently.

That's why I always say "No" when asked by a cashier if I want to contribute to whatever cause they're pushing. No accountability of where my money goes, and of course no tax receipt for me.

Happened to me after leaving the supermarket a lady rushed to me with a pen and paper explaining nothing tangible all she repeated was" donate any amount you have now" I just looked at her and proceeded with my way. .. No explanation, no accountability come on people must stop joking

Yes I contribute regularly to several recognised charities, but I don't generally give to things that just 'spring up' as it were. For example Black Lives Matter - I thought it was just a slogan but then it became an organisation you could donate to, and no doubt thousands of people did because they thought it was the righteous thing to do. And where did that money go?

We don't donate to the big causes any more. So many of the directors never leave the city but feel they need a big 4x4 vehicle. We give to places where we can see exactly what's being done with the money.

I like the fact that you hosted musical events. A lot of work on your part. But you can see where you efforts went.

I donate to a few charities, St Jude where my youngest son was in the hospital when he was a child, and food for the hungry. I’m bombarded with mail asking for money but I don’t reply. That was a nice band you guys had.

@RubyHawk St. Jude sounds like a legit operation. I've considered pulling up stakes and working there.

I often wonder where the money goes. We'd like to be regular contributors to St. Jude and Shriner's Hospital, our local Humane Society and county kennel. There are so many other charities too; but we haven't won the lottery yet.

I have considered working for St. Jude. I am a confidence inducer and an oxytocin inducer in kids. Kids with cancer might be right up my alley. But I have never sent them money.

@LindaOHio I wonder if they're hiring. Sometimes I think I need a change. But I'd miss my music friends if I moved away from here.

I had an amount taken out of each paycheck and sent to Children's Miracle Network. I also volunteered my time answering phones taking donations for them at the local radio station... I hope the money always got used for the kids in need.

Yes its a common occurrence and people do enjoy the money themselves instead of directing it to the intended cause
