Artificial Intelligence, do you look forward to your future with it, or fear it?

I would say I feel keenly interested, but at the same time I have a bit of dread. I saw a researcher from Google on 60 minutes not long ago, who says the future with AI is Limitless. Even he the expert, does not fully understand the capabilities, and they showed them playing a soccer game. Apparently, the bots trained themselves to do certain moves. The implication being they could teach themselves many things that are not in the program. He said AI is a bit dangerous, but will be rolled out to the public in stages. He thinks people will adapt to it, much the way it they have learned to use smartphones. Hey, if I can get a robot in the next 10 years that folds my clothes, I will be happy. How do you feel about the development of AI?

Me too, some good and some bad. It seems it would be easy for it to fall into the wrong hands.

@snowy22315 It’s going to be such a different world. It already is in so many ways. Hopefully more good happens.

At this point, I would add that I am fascinated by what it is capable of and how nearly human its thought processes are. Its potential for development is limitless, and whether or not it will be damaging to humanity will likely rely on how we humans use it. Because of this, I remain open to what it might do to us. I do not now see any harm, but only time will tell if there are risks to further developing it.

@snowy22315 No idea how they work if there is still human intervention. Although I know AI works independently of human control.

@rsa101 Yes, it can and the researchers do not fully understand how that happens or how far it can go. I think just the things that they are pretty sure can be controlled should be released on the public. The most sophisticated ones maybe should be relegated to work on medical or global issues, with a deactivation switch located somewhere they can't access.

Maybe their "brain" so to speak could be controlled from a remote location so they can't turn themselves on and off.

I welcome artificial intelligence in how they can further advance medical innovations. If they can also make things safer for people in high risk jobs I welcome that too. However, in too many ways artificial intelligence already owns us, and that is scary. If we didn't have immoral people determined to use AI to further the downfall of others it wouldn't be as scary. It also concerns me how many jobs will be obsolete one day which will leave so many people without jobs. We will adapt, as society always does, but of course it never hurts to keep a healthy bit of skepticism.

Yes, in general I would say it is a good and beneficial thing, however, it can be used for negative purposes and we have to be prepared for that. The good and the bad, yin and yang. I think we have already found that with technology. New jobs will have to be developed. I think we should set AI to work solving the climate crisis.

I see you already mentioned the movie that comes to my mind when I read about too much artificial intelligence, I Robot but also A.I. starring Jude Law.

I just hope the eggheads put in a foolproof "off" switch into their creations. I'm sure there will come a time when we will NEED to shut them off.

Yeah, I was just reading some scary stuff, that this decade determines whether or not AI will lead to the end of civilization...and this was from respected researchers in the field."I Robot" come to life." Yeah, there needs to be a sleep mode or off mode installed in them or something for sure.

@DaddyEvil That is just the thing, as smart as they are likely to be, they might be able to teach themselves about the switch. They should eliminate that from the code..so it is an impossiblity.

@snowy22315 And thinking about that, the "off" switch needs to be in an easily accessible location that the AI can't block off from us or disable.

There are pros and cons like any other invention, so developers must be aware of the risk and do away with it. There will always be cons but they should be minimal and not destructive to human life. The pros must outweigh the cons.

I am not sure they can do away with all the risk, as the limit of the technology is not yet known, and may never be.

Maybe a bit unrecognizable from what has been before. No doubt at all we are living in a technological age. The pace of change can be a bit bewildering.

Yeah, AI, not sure I'm buying into that cuz it takes people to create the machines and programs that run it and some people scare the bageezas outta me.

@rebelann Not true, and that is part of what makes them so scary. As I wrote in the discussion, they taught themselves various soccer moves. They were only programmed to basically play the game. They learn from their mistakes and can think how to correct them.

I don't fear the researchers, but what the machines could teach themselves to do, is a bit scary.

I am thankful that the experts agree that it is dangerous and should be introduced to the public slowly, very slowly for this old girl. It is alot to wrap my head around the hows of it all.

It would be nice to have something more functional than an Alexa. It would be neat to have your own mechanical servant in the household.

@snowy22315 They do have them in restaurants in our city and I think that they are great as servers because they do keep us apart from other people, although we also have to realize that they come close to customers and need to be wiped down in between going from one table to another.

Well, it might take a lot of jobs that are now on the market. Maybe if crooks get a hold of it, it could be used to drain money from our bank accounts or something.
