The photo shows Dublin’s Ha’penny Bridge which spans the River Liffey in the centre of the city. The cast-iron pedestrian bridge was built in 1816 in Shropshire, England and was originally called the Wellington Bridge. The name was changed to Liffey Bridge after the Irish War of Independence. However, its common name is Ha’penny Bridge owing to the ha’penny toll charged to cross it. This was later increased to a penny ha’penny. It replaced seven ferries which were in bad condition. In 2001, 27,000 pedestrians were using the bridge on a daily basis. In 2012, a number of love locks were removed and, in 2013, another 300 kg of locks were removed.

I am a little confused, when you say 'locks' were removed are you talking about hair? I know very little about bridges as you probably know.

There is a very famous iron bridge in Shropshire - one of the first I think, so I don't think the Ha'penny was built by the Irish.

I think locks are enclosures that raise the boat up to go over the dam. Am I right?

These are padlocks that lovers clip to the bridge. I've written about them now.

I've written about them now and you've possibly seen it. They are padlocks that lovers fasten to bridges or whatever.

I remember reading stories about those love locks being removed. I had not heard of anything like that before.

The weight of dozens of locks can cause problems for the structures.

That is a good information. I came to know of a new name of a Bridge as well as a river (Liffey). The view makes one long to visit such a place. A nice share !

As it says in the text, the toll to cross it used to be a ha'penny.

Eventually, the weight of so many locks began to impact on the safety of the bridge.

A very unusual name for a bridge that crosses the River Liffey in Dublin.

We saw a footbridge in Paris that was awash with locks. I wonder how many of the couples are still together.
