About a month after we moved into our home, my nephew gifted us 4 hens and a rooster. Since then we have enjoyed fresh eggs. About 2 months ago a nasty hawk killed one of the hens. Our dog finally managed to chase it away. My husband said we would be getting more chickens soon. In the middle of February hubby went to tractor supply. He came home with 36 chicks. I would have been happy with 12 chicks. Two days later he came home with 6 more chicks. We had 42 chicks in a pen that my hubby made from 2 dog crates. One chick didn't make it. So we have 41 chicks, 3 adult hens, and an adult rooster. Hubby built a 10x10 coop using mostly pallets. Once the chicks had their feathers we moved them outside to the coop I was thrilled to get them out of our living room. The dust and smell was horrible!!! They should be ready to lay eggs near the end of June. People are already starting to save egg cartons for me. I'm certain we will have more eggs than we can eat and sell!! Our dog, Ellie, is part border collie. She herds them back into the coup at night or when she spots a predator flying overhead. She does a great job. I've joined a few chicken groups on Facebook. They say there is no such thing as too many chickens. I now know it to be true. I want a few more!

Nice to have a dog that will herd them home at night. I grew up at my grandparents and they had chickens. I know how nice it is to have fresh eggs. My grandmother would make monstrous pancakes. They were from a mix but she added fresh eggs. One pancake was all you needed. It was a bit more than an inch thick and filled the frying pan. Huge! I agree that there is no such thing as too many chickens.

It sounds like things are going well for you. That's a lot of chickens so you should get plenty of eggs. How does Little MIss like having all those chickens?

She loves the chickens. She is not afraid of them either. We go inside the coop and she will pick them up like a champ.

I would like to get myself some chickens, but I am afraid that wild animals like the fox or coyote would get them.
