Last night I looked at my list and saw there were no Gordon Lightfoot songs. I wondered what was wrong with me, then I saw he didn’t have any singles released in 1973. We’ll never see the likes of his talent again. Speaking of dearly departed greats, here’s today’s song that is now fifty years old.
Behind Closed Doors - Charlie Rich
This was a massive crossover hit. It’s the “poster child” song for the “Countrypolitan” era, the pop-flavored country music that came after the 60s’ “Nashville Sound.”
And it was BANNED by a lot of stations!
Yeah, we can’t have a husband saying his wife makes him glad that he’s a man, can we?
And yes, that mindset was just fifty years ago.
Anywho, this was written by the late Kenny O’Dell, who also wrote the Judds’ big hit “Mama, He’s Crazy.” And, of course, the Silver Fox himself, Charlie Rich, sang it so beautifully.
A real love song that’s not lost any of it beauty since 1973.

I like the country vibe. It seems funny that that song was banned, while some songs nowadays are openly cursing and insinuating or having s****l innuendoes, with accompanied grinding of bodies, etc. and they are not banned but are #1 on charts and are openly applauded on TV.

I know. There were some country stations that wouldn’t play Roy Clark’s song “I Never Picked Cotton” because of the line, “In the time I’ve got there ain’t a hell of a lot that I can look back on with pride.” That was, I think, 1970 or 71. And now you have songs with the “F word” in the title being nominated for Grammy awards.

@FourWalls Exactly, and some artists perform with extremely suggestive body language., and no one is complaining.

My favorite of his is an obscure tune from 1969 called “Life Has It’s Little Ups and Downs.”

@JudyEv — that’s America for you. The “snobbery or worse” we have now has always been around.

I remember reading about Grandpa Jones saying his song “Make Me a Pallet Down on the Floor” was banned because the censor had no clue what a pallet was and wouldn’t ask! (Sleeping arrangements in the south, blankets and maybe a sleeping bag are known as pallets.)

@FourWalls And wouldn't ask! How's that for snobbery or worse? I'd actually come across pallet somewhere or other.

That’s a sweet sentiment. I never thought of it as “dirty” as much as an expression of real love.

A talent can do that. We sometimes forget what a great instrument the human voice is.
