The Irish sheep have right-of-way

I’ve been promising readers I’d put up some photos of the Irish sheep so here is a collage taken on Achill Island in county Mayo. The lower two photos were taken by Vince. He had the front seat in the car so got the better photo of the sheep on the road. On that occasion, I had a very nice image of the dashboard but not such a nice one of the sheep. They are black-faced mountain sheep and are very tough and hardy as they would need to be in these areas.

Not all sheep have horns. It depends on the breed. This is a Dorset Horn sheep.

We kept our coats on most of the day but it was also quite sunny in patches. A lovely day all round.

The lambs were just gorgeous. Very, very black on the black bits and very, very white elsewhere. lol

Do the sheep ignore you if you honk your horn at them? That's what most cattle here do... The cattle look at the car and then deliberately look away again.

We didn't honk at them but I doubt it would make much difference.

@JudyEv I seriously doubt honking at the sheep will hurry them along, either.

They were surprisingly hard to photograph in a way. I took dozens, as did Vince, just to get a few nice ones.

I know exactly what you're saying. They are very 'pattable'.

I, too, have nice views of the dashboard, or the sideposts around the door, or the driver's arm when they're pointing out things...

Vince would have got a nice shot of the Queen in her car when she was in Perth for CHOGM but our friend threw out her hand to wave - right in front of the camera.

The photos in the collage are well taken ! Irish sheep seem to be popular and get preferential treatment over there.

The Irish have worked out that the tourists love them and half all the souvenirs have little black and white sheep on them. Socks, tea-towels, coffee cups, fridge magnets, place mats, oven mitts - all have sheep on them now.

Those sheep are cute. I always like to see the babies tried to get milk from their moms.

@JudyEv I think so, I have seen some Mom scolding the babies.

@LadyDuck Sometimes they bunt so hard they lift the mother's hind legs off the ground.

They take absolutely no notice of cars. I didn't see any that had been hit by cars.

I thought only goats had horns. And I didn't know that different breeds of sheep have horns, also.

@JudyEv My grandma put a blue poison on the heads of her calves. This stopped the horns(most of the time) from growing. It was some type of acid.

@JudyEv There are breeds of cattle, they let the horns grow long. Not milking cows, of course.

When we had our small acreage we had pet sheep. I really enjoyed having them.
