I Lived With a Thief

As some of you know that I am back working onsite. My WFH stint ended in February but still have the chance to go back home in July.
I took the risk renting on a bedspace set up.
I am the first tenant to occupy the first bed at the third floor in February. And in March a new tenant arrived.
It was a risk to trust the person not knowing his background. He was so nice to me. He was friendly. And I would not know it was his tactic to lure me into that good behavior. There were instances that we went to 711 together. We ate and chatted before the incident. It was as if we were friends. Other store owners thought that were really closed friends. He is in his fifties and disabled.
I doubted him when there was an incident of inside Job robbery at the unit where I am staying. That was on April 21st. I already have a hint the following week because he seldom return to the dorm whenever I am around.
On April 28th, the worst part of my stay at the dorm. It wasn't safe at all to trust anyone. I trusted the owner's decision to accept him as a tenant. Well, I was wrong. At 8 am, he came home to the dorm. I was still awake. But already sleepy. That day at 6 am it is as if my mind talked to itself and said start packing. If only I listened to my alert mind and not my sleepy head, I would have found out that my Jansport backpack was already stolen.
My sleepy head won, at around 9 am I felt sound asleep. I did not hear anything from the other tenant. At around 10:30 am I woke up. I don't know but it was as if something pulled me. I reached to my bag to check the time, I can't touch anything. I stood up. Saw no sling bag. My phone was no where to be found. I run as quickly as possible downstairs. I asked the store owner at the ground floor if he saw the guy from the 3rd floor. He said he just went down 10 minutes ago. I went out to look for him but he was out of sight.
We checked the CCTV, he went out at 10:23 AM carrying my sling bag. He walked past the students and turned left, when I walked past the students so fast, and turned right. If only I was early, I could have caught him.
My phones and cash were stolen. Even my IDs.

@jobelbojel If the police could see his face on CCTV, there's still a chance he can be caught.

I hate when this happens. Some people are despicable, and he is one of them. Sharing space with a stranger is often not the best or the safest. Sorry that happened to you.

@MarieCoyle Thank you, Marie. I never had the chance to report back here. Well, I did not go back to the police station. First, they don't have the name of the person.

One of my girls had an apartment with another girl when they were in college. The other girl disappeared one day--with everything of value she could find that belonged to my daughter. After that, no more roommates. I really do not like thieves. I hope you can live with your brother!

I`m sorry to know that I really don`t like to stay in a room with other tenants. It is better for me to get a room for myself because I can`t sleep good if I am with someone I don`t really know for a long time.

@jobelbojel I understand that kind of room sharing should atleast have some cabinets with lock or locker so you can atleast lock your things

I am sorry to hear that.. It is really hard to live with people you don't really know.
I am curious, how much do they charge now for bedspace or room for rent per month?

Too bad experience. The landlord should be cautious in accepting tenants. He should asked for police clearance, etc.for securiity reasons.
