Emu on the interstate, running around!

There has been an emu running around our area for several days. No one seems to be able to catch it. They have called in specialty animal people, the police have tried, veterinarian students, you name it--and it's still running free, dodging in front of cars and running through neighborhoods. People have been told not to approach it. Others have slammed on their brakes to avoid hitting it.
I didn't think I would see it, but I did, yesterday. It was close to the exit I was taking at the time to go to the doctor. It makes the news here every day, people are still trying to catch it. Last summer some were accidently allowed to escape from a breeder, and they caught most of them at the time, but not all. The town it escaped from is about an hour from here, but evidently this emu likes to travel! The question remains how it survived the winter outside when it was used to being cared for.
If you come my way, watch out for the wild and elusive EMU!!

Well, today it was on a big, busy interstate, darting between cars going over 70 MPH, that were having to stop quickly and try to avoid hitting it, so yes, I would say that's a problem!

@MarieCoyle I understand it. Any animal is not easy to catch.

I've done animal rescues for years. Some of those dogs and cats were feral...it took forever to catch them.

Poor thing. I hope someone gets a hold of it before it is seriously hurt, as it has to be scared. I lived across the street from an emu farm for two years. Then, the college I attended served emu burgers for lunch for about a month. I never ate one of the burgers.
They were just so funny every time I saw them up by the fence.

This emu runs so fast, it's incredible. When I saw it running by, all I could think of was the Road Runner cartoon from years ago--that thing is FAST!!
I am not sure I could eat emu. They seem to be something that people want to try to raise now, so I guess there is a market for them.

I haven't tried one. I was told by a friend they were good, but not sure if I will ever try one or not.

@MarieCoyle They contain a lot less fat than beef, but reportedly taste the same.

@MarieCoyle They are related to ostrich, they run really fast.

Yes, I knew they are related, they are a lot alike. This emu must have 9 lives like a cat. No one has been able to catch it and it's been running around for about 5 days here.

That emu can really run fast! You can't even hardly see the legs moving, they are just a blur. I hope he gets caught very soon.

The funny thing is that there is a story from Minnesota of a loose emu that was caught by the authorities recently.

@MarieCoyle Most likely the emus just want to get out of their homes and into the streets.

Just on a very long hike. Maybe they just want to be social!

Weird, George. Maybe the owners are tired of them and letting them loose? More than likely they are just breaking free somehow, I think.

Most people just want it to be safe and not be killed, or to cause an accident and endanger people.

Poor emu. I hope someone can catch it before it has to spend another winter outside. Have a great day.
