Artwork in Dublin Castle

I don’t know who the guy is in the left-hand painting. Perhaps someone could do that magic thing with an app that tells you about paintings, etc. It’s hanging in one of the rooms in Dublin Castle but I’ve forgotten the name of the rider now. When I first saw it, I thought they’d modelled it on the portrait of Napoleon on his horse but once I checked, it’s really not much like it at all. The portrait of Napoleon was painted by Jacques-Louis David, a Frenchman, between 1801 and 1805. There are five versions of this artwork so I might write about them later. Edit: Thanks to @LadyDuck, I now know the portrait in Dublin Castle is of King George III and was painted by Sir William Beechey (1753-1839).

I was hoping Anna might be able to help. I've relied on her expertise a few times lately.

The painting makes me wonder if the painter had no clue about horses, I just don't see a horse rearing like that on a mountain side.

If a horse gets upset, it would rear up wherever it was. I guess poetic licence comes into play too.

You're right about the poetic license but I honestly don't know enough about horses to actually know if they rear up like that on a mountain side.

@rebelann Apparently he was on a mule at that point. I'm going to write about it.

Sometimes you could find the signature of the painter from a corner in the painting. I like visiting artwork museum. I like those famous paintings.

I was more interested in who the subject was. Eventually I found it in the catalogue too.

No idea about painting but I find them interesting because there are many story behind in every painting

That's very true and sometimes the stories are very intriguing.

In my opinion the guy in the left is "George III" on Horseback, the original should be on display in Weymouth Museum.

@JudyEv Thanks for adding my name to your discussion. The poor horse of Napoleon surely had a hard time.

Thanks for that Anna. George III is ringing bells. I have the booklet of the paintings on display and now I've found an entry for King George III on Horseback so that has to be him. Thanks again. I think I'd add the details to the discussion.

Interesting photos. I would love to tour a caste. The closest I came was the Biltmore House in North Carolina.

From the outside, this doesn't look very much like a castle - not to me anyway. I expected towers and ramparts, etc but it's more like a municipal building.

They are both great paintings. Is it considered plagiarism if they look similar?

No, I'm sure it isn't. With paintings I think it would need to be an almost exact copy before there would be a fuss.

Fair enough. There were a heap of nice manly bodies in the Wedgewood Room - all sculptures. They could be used as clothes hangers maybe.

With your experience of horse portraiture I thought you'd be critiquing the paintings!

I would love to be able to draw horses but I'm hopeless at it. I can draw one and pick all the faults but can't correct them.

On a quiz night, I once identified that napoleon picture from a close up of the horse's eye. That shows I've seen it a lot!

Most of the paintings were of gods and goddesses. They weren't really my thing.
