My neighbor caught me when I took the trash out this morning and asked me if I would help them set up a new-to-them computer.
Easy enough, so I said sure. They found a monitor for it at the thrift store but it wouldn't work with the old tower. I gave them one of the extras we had that hadn't been used in at least a year. Got it set up, powered it on... no hard drive detected!
I forgot to plug the cables back into the drive when I was done transferring their files off it a few days ago. . Fixed that, and while we were chatting it came up that the landlord was supposed to be here sometime in the past three days but hasn't shown up yet.
They're supposed to be looking at the building's foundation and possibly moving forward with fixing it by injecting foam to counter the way it's settling. We live in the other half of the same building and hadn't heard a thing about any of this.
Dunno if it's because it's just going to be their side, but I'm making sure I catch up on the deep cleaning I've been neglecting in the next few days. Kinda hope that they're not going to mess with our side yet, it apparently involves drilling holes in the concrete pad inside the house and that's probably going to mean lots of noise and needing to move at least some of the lizards around.
Buuuuuut if they do maybe we'll get new flooring out of the deal. They have mostly linoleum downstairs in the next door unit, way better than all the carpet we have. I wouldn't be sad to see any of it go.

The landlord at our last house had to drill into the concrete flooring to do something... We had to be out of the house while they were doing it but it only took them one day. Then they installed new carpeting. (It was an ugly grey Berber. I'm sure it was the cheapest they could find. .
Good luck with it. Maybe they haven't told you because it doesn't need done on your side of the building.

@DaddyEvil Yeah, but the wild snakes also go right back outside within a few hours.

@yukimori I'm glad you're not keeping them... I'm sure they're glad, too.

You'd think so, right? Still haven't heard a single peep about it. The landlord's been kind of flaky recently, though... they were supposed to come through back in January for an inspection with the guy who's basically the super here and ended up leaving him to do it all by himself. He found out after they were already on the road and heading out of state!
I think in terms of noise it probably won't be as bad as when they tore up the driveway to replace it a few years ago. That was a whole day of jackhammering.

If it could affect you, you should've heard something about it.

That's what I'm thinking. State laws require us to have 48 hours prior notice before entry unless it's an emergency, so I'm not worried about it... aside from the fact that I ported my number to another carrier and might have missed a text. I don't think texts technically count as legal notice anyway, but they've been good to us so I don't have a problem letting them in to get the foundation stuff addressed. I just have a bunch of clutter all over because we've been actively working on downsizing stuff.

@yukimori Wellsit's written so maybe? Not sure what your state considers legal or what not.

@kaylachan It's weird because a written note through the door is okay and considered legal but a text isn't.
Most of the property management companies around here just send notices like that through certified mail. I don't think I've ever had notice from anyone we were renting from that was shorter than a week.

Oh my that may be a freaking nuisance doing the foundations!!
Yes, maybe a good side to it.
I have new flooring here, not sure what it is, but it looks like plank wood and is very durable.
You are too kind Yuki to help your neighbor like that

Maybe the vinyl "wood?" I think that's what they put down on one of the other units not that long ago. Really nice stuff.
They're pretty awesome neighbors so I don't mind helping them with stuff like that. Doesn't make sense for them to pay through the nose to get it done elsewhere, plus they'll help me out by letting me know if my kids are being downright obnoxious when I go back to work.

Carpet has gone out of favour for some areas in particular. We do have carpet in the bedrooms here but I'd be just as happy with something else.

Seems like you're getting a computer and possibly new flooring out of this neighborly interaction. Who knew helping someone with tech issues could lead to home improvements? Just make sure to keep those lizards safe!
