been busy lately

I am still alive! I've been quite busy lately. Today my big task has been defrosting the stand up freezer in the garage. It's almost finished, and then I have to wipe it out, turn it back on, and let it get cold again before I can move the food from the coolers back into the freezer. I took inventory of things while clearing out the freezer. We a pretty much out of proteins (although we have a few packs of bacon and a few chubs of breakfast sausage), so I'll have to restock soon. I also got some storage bins to put in the freezer so I'll have an easier time organizing things. I'm hoping that on my next day off, I can do some pantry organization too. The goal is to have all of this finished before the kids are out of school for the summer because it will be a lot harder to do while they're home all of the time. They only have 17 school days left, so I'm running out of time!

I'm happy to see you back! I have been wondering how you were doing. I took everything out of our freezer a couple of weeks ago, cleaned it and then put everything back. I wish we had a deep freezer. I'd store more homemade meals if we had one.

Then you could cook less often!

@spiderdust That's true. And while I like to cook, I get tire of needing to cook every day, or even more than once a day. I usually make extra when I cook so we can eat that again for lunch the next day and still have some for the freezer. Are you and your family doing okay? How's your ankle doing?

@DaddyEvil My ankle is not doing as well as I'd like. Around the last hour of my shift, my foot usually starts hurting a lot. Yesterday it was aching before I even started, and I was visibly limping by the end. I've been doing the exercises that I've been assigned in order to stretch out the ligaments a bit more, but I don't heal as quickly as I used to at all.

Good to see you. Always feels good to be organized. We just got another big package of salmon filets. I'm trying to feed us more fish. So good for us. Only about two weeks until the kids are out huh? Hope you all have a fun and safe summer.

The school year went by fast! I'm trying to decide if I'm getting the kids waterpark passes for this summer or not. I need to make sure we do some fun stuff.

Too much work for me. You’ve tired me out just reading that. Glad you got that accomplished. Now, for summer and all your hard work to be destroyed by the kids being home.

EXACTLY! Although hopefully I can move all the frozen treats (popsicles, etc.) into the kitchen freezer before summer break so they'll leave the deep freeze alone.

Heh. Lapsed academic. I just saw that and it made me chuckle. Is that at all like me being a "Liberal in recovery"? I don't know that I've ever defrosted a freezer.

@spiderdust Heh. Sounds like the book I'm writing. I have achieved new levels of procrastination.

@TheHorse Part of me would like to go back and finish it, but I don't know that it would significantly change my life at this point (other than actually having the degree) and it would be a huge cost and sacrifice for my family.

I was 1 semester away from my degree and got ill. I even completed my senior thesis! Somehow 10 years have gone by and I haven't made it back yet.

I had a freezer just like that one, an upright, not frost free--for years. Bought it at Sears in 1983. In 2013, I got a small chest freezer that I didn't have to defrost, and when I moved I gave the old one away to a fellow who helped us move my stuff. I got 30 years out of it...and I discovered it was using wild amounts of electricity. The newer one does not, I don't know the difference but I'm happier with this one. I would be lost without a freezer other than the refrigerator, it's such a money saver, plus I make meals ahead and have them ready when needed. Some of the schools here are already out for the year, and they had graduations this week--the high school not far from me had their graduation today. Summer is upon us!

I regret not buying a frost-free freezer when we got this one! Although the frost buildup (at least this time) is because someone left the freezer door open. I think it does have the "energy star" rating, which means it's supposed to use less energy, but I can't swear to that.

@MarieCoyle It's from the age where they built things to last! I kinda miss those days.

@spiderdust My old upright had no energy star! It just sucked electricity and made lots of ice for me to defrost! I don't miss it. However, I understand from talking to that fellow's wife that the freezer still works! 41 years old!

It was a warm day and I had the day off, and I really wanted to get it finished and organized before school let out.

That's a lot of ice in the freezer. I also have to defrost, but it's not a lot of ice, it can wait some more days.

@spiderdust Ouch, it happened to a friend and she was vacationing. She came back home after 15 days to find a mess. Now it looks great.

Yes, someone accidentally left the door ajar a few days ago and a lot of ice built up. It looks considerably better now.

I ran into that too. Some stuff I just ended up tossing, not knowing quite how long it had been in there and having no idea what to do with it still. I need the space for things we will actually eat.

Good to see you. Defrosting a freezer is a big job. I'm amazed how close the end of the school term is. It seems like the kids just went back to school.

I was going to say OMG you're alive. But I already knew you were alive. Well mostly. I feel like we haven't really caught up except for here and there in forever. I need to do our fridge and freezer when we get back from this trip in Texas. Our fridge is having issues and I am really hoping we don't have to replace it again.
