To what do you compare life? To a river or to a road? Why?

“Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re going to get.” – Forrest Gump I am curious my dear friends, to what you’re comparing life to. Do you compare life to a flowing river? Or do you perceive life as a busy road? You can also come up with your own comparisons if you don’t consider the river or the road as appropriate things to compare with life. Tell me your thoughts and enlighten me more. Thank you. Picture is mine.

I would say sometimes it is a flowing river, and other times a busy road...neither seems to be the perfect metaphor.

@snowy22315 That's a good way to put it, I agree, life is an unpredictable journey. Have a great day ahead of you.

A metaphor, what do you think is the perfect metaphor? Would you like to share your thoughts?

I've never thought of life that way but now that you have posed the question I would have to say that life is like the wind.

The wind? Yes, it could be sometimes light and sometimes strong. Is that what you mean?

Not really, I was thinking that the wind can blow from many directions and sometimes it goes around and around.

I would compare life to more akin to a roller coaster.

That's a good way to put it, sometimes we're down and sometimes we're up. Am I correct?

Sometimes I think of river as students or knowledge which comes by, flows endlessly, spread around

That's understandable. Quite a good comparison. What about life? What do you think of it?

But chocolates are all sweet and pleasant, while not every day of our life is pleasant. Life is about choices, we can compare life to a road. There are smooth roads and rocky roads, uphills and downhills, short and long, crooked or straight. We just have to continue walking.

I think you're right. Chocolates are sweet. And roads can be as you described, which is more comparable to life. I forgot the term when you liken one thing with another. Is it analogous? Not sure.

@Jenaisle Analogues it is correct, comparable in certain respects.

Awesome! That's a great way to liken life - a good novel still being written, I love that. Yeah, we're writing our own novels of life.

For me, often life is like a River or like a Road at different times. And many a times, the different stages represent stages of a Cricket Test Match (maximum length 5 days..). It's unusual to think in those terms, but just like the ebbs and flows of those matches, life too sees different stages of ups, downs, joys and challenges with varied emotions.

Yeah, I understand why you say it, that's how my life was before too, but now, I want it to be as Steve Marshall @innertalks put it, "a quiet walk in the park."

I would have loved the river, free flowing and continuing to the lovely sea. But my life has been a rocky road.

Perhaps, you can then say, half is a river and half is the road. Kidding. Yes, we often describe life as a rocky road.

If we are in a river, we are either moving with the flow, or trying to swim against the flow, but with a road, we always have to move ourselves, as the road itself will not move us along it. I like the description of one self-help guru who said that life should be like a quiet and peaceful stroll along a path, in a park, on a mildly warm day, not too hot, nor too cold, not too sunny, nor too cloudy, just right. Life is not meant to be rushed, then, nor should we allow life to rush us along either. The river might rush us along too much, and the road might stress us with its business too, and so, I prefer the quiet walk in the park, any day, to those two.....

Awesome! I love how you put it, and why you haven't chosen the river or the road. This is how I like my life to be - a quiet walk in the park.

@Jenaisle Yes, just enjoying life for what it is, and being a part of that life in nature, in our being ourselves, as naturally as we can do so too.

A flowing river sounds too peaceful to me, so I'll go with a busy, sometimes winding road. With many bumps along the way.

I smiled at your quotation, Indeed, we're too busy in making plans that life has already gone past us. Yes, a road has many twists and turns and some humps and bumps along the way. I can see where you're coming from.
