There are 18 days of school left. I have a student with 3 Fs who is working on her 4th F. Her average is a 40% so it isn’t even close. The guidance counselor has already given the mother information about summer school. It is clear to all that she isn’t passing for the year. We set up a phone conference over a month ago and the mother didn’t answer the phone. Guess who called today wanting a conference? Like to what effing end? There is nothing that will change. Does she just want to complain and yell at me? No thanks. The guidance counselor got snippy with me and said “I can’t say no when a parent wants a conference”. The hell with that. I say if the mom wants a conference so badly that she can take the day off from work and come in. Then she would be forced to admit that it really isn’t important.

I feel your frustration. My sister is also a teacher and has to deal with parents like that. Don’t allow the parent’s attitude take away why you are an educator. That child may be bored, or maybe need to be tested for ADHD. Concentrate on how you can help that child and try to ignore the ignorance of that parent.

I am sure there are alternatives for this student for instance felonies in the future.

I don't think she is a bad kid or that she will become a criminal. She just has no business being in a college prep level class.

There was a lot of screaming around if there was a bad grade. NOT my mom at the teachers, but my mom at ME. I got a lot of “does not pay attention” reports in elementary school because I was bored out of my freaking skull. They recognize that today…back then, they didn’t. Anyway, good luck. Three years until you can retire, right?

Does the guidance counselor have to be at the conference? If so, make him talk to the mother... Nothing says you have to be the one getting yelled at when she couldn't be bothered to answer the phone for the last conference.

I would agree to the conference; but that's just me. What is with these kids and parents these days? My parents would have punished me for getting bad grades and taken away some of my privileges...and yelled a lot.
