When I look at these songs and try to “rank” them, I promise I don’t think that this song should follow that song because the singers were friends or anything. I point that out because it just might seem that way with today’s song coming after yesterday’s. A coincidence…but a nice one! Here’s another song taking you back to 1973, and probably the most obscure one on the list.
Any Old Wind That Blows - Johnny Cash
Sorry, Linda, two country songs in a row.
Yes, Cash and Kris Kristofferson (yesterday’s singer) were good buddies. They met in a weird way: Kris landed a helicopter on Johnny’s lawn out in Hendersonville in order to pitch “Sunday Morning Comin’ Down” to him. Obviously Cash didn’t object, because (a) he recorded the song, and (b) he ended up in a “supergroup” with Kris (the Highwaymen).
Here we have a song that was a hit but you’ve probably never heard unless you’re a die-hard Cash fan. “Oney” (not Olney, JJ ) was the big hit on this album and the one that still gets the attention.
Bummer. This Dick Feller composition (he cowrote a lot of the Smoky and the Bear soundtrack with Jerry Reed) is an ode to the free spirited individual, so free-spirited that her actions confuse her lover (“the only reason that she ever has for leaving is she wants to”).
This has been a favorite for 50 years now. Not the first time it’s shown up in a top ten list, and probably won’t be the last.

Understood. But what you need to do is get a batch of “yep” and “love it” and “great song” and “I knew you weren’t a total weirdo with your music tastes” cooked up for tomorrow’s song.

We had the album because my dad liked “Oney” and I liked this one.

He loved all kinds of music, as his guest list on his TV show proved, so he could move you in many different ways.
