OUCH!!

Somehow a wasp got inside. It happens often. Because I have been working outside and I am sweaty I guess it was attracted to me. It landed on the back of my neck/shoulder and I did not know what it was. If I had I would have not done anything, but I did not know it was a wasp, and it itched. I reached my hand back there. I promptly got stung, and those stings burn like fire. So I walked out to my weed patch of a yard and picked some plantain/plantago. I squished it up and had Bob apply it to the sting. Great relief.Still a little sore but it does not feel like a red hot poker. Not sure what my lesson is here, except make sure you do not aggravate a wasp, and know what wild growing things make good remedies.

I was once awakened from a very nice nap with several wasps stinging my back. I still am not sure how they got into my room but I am quite sure I did not disturb them in my sleep. Mean little creatures that day.

@sallypup it was. I would say I freaked out a little to say the least. It took me a long time to be able to actually relax in that room again.

I didn’t know that was what you did for a wasp sting. Good to know! I currently have three wasps living between my patio door screen, and the glass patio door. To avoid being annoyed that they are always there I have named them Jimmy, Tom, and Lou. I’m not sure if Lou is male or female, by the way. I’m trying to form an emotional connection so my aggravation with their presence ceases.

I would not like them being there all the time, can you set them free somehow. I remind myself that the kill some spiders and other pesty critters. I guess it is good to personify them.

@Fleura They are. I do not know which ones are which. I had assumed these were paper wasps--the kind that make the many chambered paper nests, but I found (and removed) a mud dobber nest today. I am going to have to do some research.

Glad you had that to help. I usually use baking soda.

Vinegar for wasp stings, soda for bees.

I'm terribly sorry. Wasp stings are the worst. I always put wet baking soda on my disaster.

Grandma used to scoop up dirt and make mud. It was probably a clay dirt.

Baking soda neutralises bee stings, vinegar is the thing to use for wasps.

Some of the natural remedies are very effective. One that always intrigued me was putting cobweb on a would that wouldn't stop bleeding. My Mum mentioned it to me once. I've never seen it done but, when doctors were hard to come by, these solutions would have been important.

@JudyEv Yes and it would probably be ok with a freshly-made one.

@Fleura I can imagine a cobweb trapping the blood and giving it time to congeal.

I have also been stung by a hornet and that is even worse, if you can imagine. And they are aggressive and will come for you in large groups.

@GardenGerty They will, the whole hive will come after you. We once had a hornets nest in our chimney. We smoked them out and they built a nest in a tree our yard.

I need some plantain or whatever cuz eventually I'll probably get stung too. I have those paper wasps here and I'm trying to figure out a way to get rid of their nests when they finally leave either in late fall or early winter .... yeah, as if we get winter. I really hate to kill them because they help control a lot of those nasty gnats that always attack my eyes in spring, this year there weren't very many gnats thankfully but the trade off is wasps.

I'm sorry that happened. I do wish I'd known that remedy about six years ago when a wasp located its nest beneath the pampas grass right outside our front door. I kept getting stung when I walked past the plant. After a few times I became allergic to their venom and had to be hospitalized every time I got stung. It was fun.

I trust you have gotten rid of the nests. Are you sure it was not a hornet. They are nasty aggressive.

@GardenGerty No, I'm not sure at all. That's what an ER doctor called the one we took in with us when I started having an allergic reaction to their stings. The guy that bought the house we were renting destroyed their nests after we moved almost six years ago.

Ouch is right poor you, I hope that nasty bite stops hurting and heals up quick. I had a bee go into my ear when I was little and bit me there. By the time my grandma got the bee out it sounded like someone had turned on a fire alarm the way I was carrying on,

When I was about ten years old a wasp got inside my trouser leg and started crawling up my leg. Like you I swatted at it, not knowing what it was. That was very painful! If I had seen it I wouldn't have done as I wasn't afraid of wasps, I remember my school-friends being surprised I didn't flinch when one landed on my nose! Vinegar is good for neutralising wasp stings.

I got a wasp trapped in the waistband of my shorts once, got a total of four stings out of that experience. I do always have vinegar on hand. The plantain was just a step out the door though.
