A short little survey if you don’t mind…

I know a lot of people do not like Walmart, including one of my best friends! They really hurt the business of mom and pop stores, sadly. I remember my late Nana used to shop at a grocery store called Doc’s. It was an independent store that charged more, but she could afford the higher prices at the time.
Anyway, how many of you shop at Walmart (Neighborhood Market OR Supercenter)? Do you have one near you, and if you’ve never been there, would you be willing to go?
I’m wondering for other countries if they have something like Walmart? While visiting Australia, my sister and I came across, was it the Big W? I’m sure @JudyEv could clarify that for me.
Thanks for answering!

We have them here, but I dislike them for the same reason, they really killed alot of small businesses.
They just took over Woolco stores after they went bankrupt, there wasn't alot of 'want' for Walmart.
But sometimes you cannot go elsewhere, so you get stuck going there for a hard to find item.

@MarieCoyle I see a lot of the greeters at Walmart are older people. In talking to them, they have been retired, but needed to make a little extra money. That always made me sad, and I wondered if Walmart was the only one who would hire them because of ageism.

I do realize that some people live places that Walmart has killed most of the other stores, so now they have to shop there, whether they like it or not. I know they ruined so many nice downtown areas as well.
People who know me know that I detest Walmart with a passion. I used to live where there was a huge Walmart distribution center. Yes, they provided a lot of jobs, and yes, the pay wasn't terrible. But the work is very hard on bodies...I can think of many people there now on disability that had to have back surgery from lifting so much, loading pallets, etc. It's not all done by forklifts and such, some of it has to be done by hand. I've known many people who worked at Walmart. They were not treated well, nor paid well.
I haven't been to one in a long, long time. If I never have to, that's just fine with me. But--I do have the option of other stores to get groceries, etc. from, and many do not. For now, I will just keep on avoiding Walmart.

I do shop at Walmart but 99% of the time I order online and either do a store pick-up or have it delivered. We have both Walmart and Target across the highway from each other

@AmbiePam on the whole Target is better for in person shopping but Walmart is great for pick-up or delivery convenience (at least here)

There's a Walmart Super Center two miles from us that we usually buy our groceries in... There's a Price Cutter four or five blocks from us but the prices are LOT higher there. We buy our chicken in Price Cutter. (The chicken in Walmart is always bruised and that ruins the flavor of the meat.)
Walmart owns stores in 20 different countries around the world. I always think it's funny that people in other countries says they wouldn't go to a Walmart store but they do... It's just called something different there.
I know ASDA is Walmart in Great Britain.

I have a real love/hate relationship with Walmart. It's basically the only place to shop around here. We have a local Piggly Wiggly (or Piggy Wiggy as my grannie used to say) and it stays in business because everyone knows it has the freshest meats and biggest variety.

@MarieCoyle My grannie always called it it Piggy Wiggy. When Nathan was about 3, he said indignantly, "You mean she can't say Pigawy Wigawy!"

I am guilty of shopping at Walmart.com from time to time. I refuse to shop at the physical store. The one here in my community is ugly. There is a huge pit of modern generic stores and fast food joints near it. So....I do what your Nana would approve of: I stick to the old stores and small businesses as much as possible. Or go on line....

@MarieCoyle When we had K-Marts, our K-Marts were like that. Maybe that's why there are no more K-Marts.

I have one Walmart very close to me, and 3 more not far away. They are all kind of scary. Fights, the stores are grossly dirty, the lines are forever long, and the police are always there arresting someone. Even if I DID like Walmart, I would still shop somewhere else.

Yes there are several big Super Walmarts near here. I mean I am walking, so it is a ways for me, but within a 5 mile radius there are several and they are extremely popular..there are 3 in fact I could get to within minutes driving.
I love Walmart, absolutely love them.
I have to get my groceries delivered and that is my go to store.
People who trash talk Walmart well I think that is silly..they are quite a good store.
And yes, they kill some small stores but at the same time, they supply a lot of families here with much needed basics that they could not get at small mom and pop stores.
Life goes on and businesses must cater to the masses here..there are a lot of people here.

Don't you think they planned it that way? Move into a town, have bargains, kill the downtown. Then (at least I see it a lot here in the Midwest) they move their stores from the original spot and build what they call a SuperCenter on the edge of the same town. Usually, the taxes are way less and they have already murdered the town's stores so they know that they will still have everyone's business.

Like I said before, I do understand people have to go there, because they don't have choices. And Walmart has made sure they don't have them, which makes me kind of sad. It's so hard for the smaller stores to compete with them, because obviously they can't buy in massive amounts like Walmart can, so their prices are higher.
Our Walmart stores here no longer have fabric departments. The Amish/Mennonite communities nearby have to go to Hobby Lobby or somewhere else to get their fabrics. Walmart sells sewing notions and other supplies, but not fabrics.

I used to shop at Wal-Mart. Not anymore. I went in looking for something for my door. I wanted a nice Christian door hanger. Not a single Christian anything in the store. It took all of five minutes for me to walk through and walk out disgusted and vowed never to step inside again. I went inside again this year because one of the products I was researching for my extreme osteoporosis was supposed to be in that store, the only store in town to carry it. Guess what? NOT. Again five minutes in and out. Never again.

Anymore I shop more online than instore and as far as mom and pop stores are concerned I really wouldn't buy much in them because they rarely stock organic food .... I rarely buy much more than food for me or the kritters but if it's something I need I check online to see if I can get a good price plus cash or points back for my purchase.

Walmart is not present in Europe and every European country has its own large stores.
Here in Switzerland we had three large Swiss grocery stores and Aldi and Lidl that are German.
I used to buy at a small store, but it does not exist anymore. I have to go to the big ones.

I like this, too. We have Ruler stores, very similar to Aldi, that do the quarter-cart thing. It really does cut down on all the carts in the parking lots rolling around--I wish all grocery stores did that.

I found the other stores here in Florida like Publix and Aldi went through Instacart, It got to be too expensive for me because Instacart even started charging for the gas it took to deliver the items. Then I discovered Walmart and I could order straight from them to be delivered to me. I love it that I can have their store brand for less Great Value and I am happy to order from them once a month,

@RasmaSandra I used the Wal-Mart delivery option for awhile, but they kept delivering my groceries to the wrong address. A couple of times I got someone else's groceries. Eventually, I decided I had to start shopping myself in person.

@AmbiePam as I said expensive, charge quite a bit to serve, and add all kinds of extra charges From what I remember they have deliver fee, service fee, and then you tip the shopper and as I said I was also charged a bit for gas and then I had, had enough. With Walmart there is a delivery fee but the tip for the driver I can adjust how I want and do not have to pay a certain percentage
