Welcome to June! I remember once upon a time that Boomerang had a “June Bugs” month, where they showed every Bugs Bunny cartoon. That’s cool! But that’s not what you’re getting from me. No, you’re stuck with music, and in this case a trip back forty years. Can you believe some of these songs are 40 now? Let’s get rolling!
Amarillo By Morning - George Strait
Hey, why should only the rock fans feel old by looking at this list?
It’s King George! Back then, he was just taking off. I mean, I saw him in 1985 in a pretty small arena, nothing like the football stadium he played here later in his career. (The late, lamented Louisville Gardens, where I also saw George Jones, R.E.M. (not together ), rasslin’ as a kid, and got to feed my schoolgirl crush for Louie Dampier when he played guard with the Kentucky Colonels in the old ABA.)
This is on my 100 favorites list. It was co-written by Terry Stafford, who was best known for his 1964 hit “Suspicion” (we’ll get to that next year in the 60-year-old music ). He had a hand in TWO of my 100 favorites country hits: this one, and Buck Owens’ ballad “Big in Vegas.”
And, of course, now George Strait is a true legend. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006 (and, in some completely worthless trivia, he’s the fourth and most recent George inducted, after George D. Hay, George Jones, and George Morgan).
This song, although 40 now (actually, older than that, because Stafford recorded it himself in the early 70s), stands as one of Strait’s great classics.
Amarillo By Morning
Written by Terry Stafford and Paul Fraser

@FourWalls As a kid, my sister and I could sing "All My Exes Live in Texas" by heart. They had one cassette tape of his, and they played it over and over.

I’m in the “casual fan” department as well. Got the greatest hits box set and saw him live, just not every album.

Pretty good song that I actually recall. I like most of George Strait's tunes.

Yes, you watch a rodeo and it’s like someone throws the “off” switch on the bull.

George is pretty popular in most of the music landscape, except for that hardcore country-hating gang (looking at Linda ).

I think someone’s been messing with the calendars, flipping them over to new years too quickly.

Louisville Gardens was kinda small (about 2,500), so George thought nothing of posing with fans as they came up to the stage to take his picture. All of that and the show was dynamite as well!

And George Harrison too Oh right, George just was influenced by some of those Country stars music like Chet Adkins and Carl Perkins
Just a really cool "laid back" sad Cowboy song!
Had to revisit this one, lol.

Sometimes I think George Harrison will be in the Country Music Hall of Fame before the Wilburn Brothers.

My Mom was a George Strait fan and although Country is not my genre, I found a few tracks I like this one being one of them. Two others I play often are "Fool Hearted Memory" and "I Look at You."
So, no "foolin" even a Classic Rocker like me can enjoy a bit of "Strait" Country music!

It’s a “generality” (“I generally don’t like….”). We all have those. I generally don’t like heavy metal but there are a few songs that I do like. Heck, I can’t stand Geddy Lee’s voice but there are a couple of Rush songs I like! (And no, they aren’t instrumentals. )

“The Chair” is great, too…”could I drink you a buy?”
He covered a Jim Lauderdale song, “Where the Sidewalk Ends,” and did it SO WELL.
