Hey, I just saw @LouAvul in the restaurant. I told her she wouldn’t know this song either. And, unless you saw the movie Valley Girl, you probably won’t know it. But dang, I love this song. It’s so 1980s post-punk! So enjoy this one that you don’t know. A Million Miles Away - The Plimsouls There were two distinct sounds in the early 80s. One was the synth sound, which you’ve probably noticed a lot in this countdown. The other was the “post-punk” rock and roll, not “hard” or “heavy metal,” but a little stronger than the “roots rock” that was taking hold with people like Marshall Crenshaw. By now you’ve tuned out so I should just shut up. Anywho, the Plimsouls had a good rocking, post-punk sound (Hoodoo Gurus kind of reminded me of their sound). They tried and tried, without much success. So they broke up. Then this song (and “Everywhere At Once”) got put in the film Valley Girl. And waddaya know, the Plimsouls had a hit! Peter Case has gone on to have an incredible solo career (although you’ve never heard of him, either…unless you saw that TV show (can’t remember which one he said it’s was) that used his song “Two Angels” during a sex scene. ) in Americana and singer/songwriter circles. I’ve never seen Valley Girl, but I’ve heard and enjoyed this song a lot over the last 40 years.
