Hey, I just saw @LouAvul in the restaurant. I told her she wouldn’t know this song either. And, unless you saw the movie Valley Girl, you probably won’t know it. But dang, I love this song. It’s so 1980s post-punk! So enjoy this one that you don’t know.
A Million Miles Away - The Plimsouls
There were two distinct sounds in the early 80s. One was the synth sound, which you’ve probably noticed a lot in this countdown. The other was the “post-punk” rock and roll, not “hard” or “heavy metal,” but a little stronger than the “roots rock” that was taking hold with people like Marshall Crenshaw.
By now you’ve tuned out so I should just shut up. Anywho, the Plimsouls had a good rocking, post-punk sound (Hoodoo Gurus kind of reminded me of their sound). They tried and tried, without much success. So they broke up.
Then this song (and “Everywhere At Once”) got put in the film Valley Girl. And waddaya know, the Plimsouls had a hit!
Peter Case has gone on to have an incredible solo career (although you’ve never heard of him, either…unless you saw that TV show (can’t remember which one he said it’s was) that used his song “Two Angels” during a sex scene. ) in Americana and singer/songwriter circles.
I’ve never seen Valley Girl, but I’ve heard and enjoyed this song a lot over the last 40 years.
A Million Miles Away
Written by Peter Case, Chris Franklin, and Joey Alkes
Recorded by the Plimsouls
From Everywhere At Once, 1983
I thought about you while the radio played:

If I were my brother-in-law I could claim to have heard all these songs. He loved '80s music. Unfortunately, I'm A 90s music fan, and I might be only one that exists save for the one guy that still adores Vanilla Ice. Bless his misguided heart, wherever that fan may be.

@FourWalls Neither could I! I saw him on his home renovation show, and that Ice Ice Baby line, was his entire show intro.

@AmbiePam — I’ve heard of one hit wonders, but he might be the first one LINE wonder in music history.

I feel that way about the 90s. And fear not, I’m not that Vanilla Ice fan. I don’t think I could name you five Vanilla Ice songs if you spotted me four and made the fifth a multiple choice question.

She might not feel that way.
We’ve met for lunch a number of times.

I never saw the movie, but I even remember the Plimsouls being on the Robert Klein Radio Show. I’ve seen Peter live twice, even got him do to a request for me in Nashville.

I remember when these songs were released. The 80s had a great decade of music

You bet! Especially the “college rock” scene. That’s what I was into back then. Wow, what music!

Their math is better than the Proclaimers, because they only were a thousand miles away.

Wanna hear something funny? Mike and I were listening to some music on YouTube about 15 minutes ago and the last song we listened to was the Proclaimers 500 Miles

Nope on this one and also neither the song nor the band, As the 1980s progressed my interest was still on the oldies and music kind of lost me in the 1990s so I was glad to find out they played a lot of classical rock on Riga stations in Latvia,

I was still experimenting with newer music in the 80s.

After disco and in competition to all the synth rock this kind of music made a comeback. And I loved it!!!

This song was one that brings back memories of me first venturing out into the club world. I think it's because they played it when I went to Dillon's in West L.A. for the first time with a friend right out of high school (it was an 18+ club).
