And then there's my drip system...

When I moved into this house in 2012, there was a front yard sprinkler system and a dead lawn. Sometime after that, Tony got the system up and running and got the lawn green again. And then we had a big drought year. I don't remember what year that was, but it's been at least 5 - 6 years. That summer we let the lawn die, and then in 2020 or 2021, we barked it over. Put down landscape cloth and covered it with bark. I've been watering the trees and flower beds every since. Some time after that, I called a couple of landscape companies to see how much it would cost to convert our sprinkler system to drip. Well, two guys didn't show up, and the third quoted me almost $3000 plus another $1000 for electric if I wanted to put it on a timer. Yikes. I thought about seeing if Tony and I could do it, but I figured it might be above our abilities. Then my step mother talked her son David into moving to Fallon where she and dad lived. So I had a conversation with him about it, because he's got experience with landscaping and irrigation. He said he thought he could do it cheaper, and we agreed on him coming over this spring and working on it. So he got here Monday and did some scoping and discovered that things were a wee bit more complicated than we had hoped. The electrical wasn't working on two channels and we didn't know where the valves were. He's older than I am and has mobility issues, and we agreed some of this was beyond his ability, so I called a landscaping company who referred me to another one who came on over. Well, yay, they were able to find the valves and replace them and hook the electric back up and get things so that David could set up the drip system. Cost me $3000 anyway though, but at least this year I have the money. And I don't have to hose water the flowers and trees any more. Yay.

I'm glad you got it done. I'm sorry it was more complicated than you expected.

It's an older house, so there were bound to be some complications...

Yes, but I think it will work correctly after that. Also they said if I had issues they'd come back and fix it for free (as long as I didn't do anything stupid to break it)...

I’m very glad you were able to do it. It’s bothersome when you see something that needs to be done, and you notice it all the time. It’s got to be a relief not to have to mess with it any longer. When my dad remarried, his wife walked into his backyard, and was like, why did you let everything die back here? He’s like, it’s too much work! Taking care of my mom tired him out too, of course. His wife now has everything green again.

@dawnald Oh, that would be nice. Diana, his wife, put in some flowers, and meant to plant a blueberry bush. Only the seeds were mislabeled and they ended up with a blackberry bush. Her efforts at tomatoes were foiled by the crows.

My backyard is maybe next year. It doesn't have any irrigation whatsoever. Most of it is natural, but there's this triangle where there used to be a deck and a doughboy pool. I'd like to have a flower garden or maybe vegetables there with a drip system.

At some point in life, we are so much overwhelmed with other things that are crucial that we let go of others not because they are not important but it's because of priorities that we have

I'm still using a watering can, don't feel like fighting with the hose.

@dawnald It is, but both the hose bib and the hose leak, and I haven't gotten around to turning it on from the inside. If I remember correctly, even the shut off valve leaks.

the hose is too much work. A watering can would be way too much...
