Not Sending Packages to Soldiers Anymore

United States

Back a while ago I mentioned that I adopt deployed US soldiers through a program called Soldier's Angels. We are required to send 1 package a month to the soldier we adopt, plus 2 letters or cards. I am not very good with sending packages but I have been doing my monthly packages and am stressed out about making sure I send them every 30 days. The regulations for the customs forms are getting more and more complicated and some packages that I have sent, as well as many others that adopt the soldiers, have been getting sent back. What a waste of money. On top of that, my small little rural post office has now decided they won't take handwritten customs forms anymore, but will only accept forms that have already been filled out online and then printed and brought in with the package. The postmistress has decided they are too small to waste time typing in all of the information. But honestly what I have heard through the grapevine is that she doesn't know how to do it well and doesn't want to deal with it. So now I have to go to other post offices in other towns to mail my overseas packages because my printer doesn't work with my Chromebook. It's getting to be too much for me to deal with so I am going to drop out of the program that requires sending packages and join the program that just requires letters to be sent instead. That will also help with all of the clutter building up in my closet downstairs. I have mentioned before that I am kind of a squirrel and have way too much clutter. That includes the clutter from all of the things I have bought to send to the soldiers. When I see a good deal, I stock up...oops. Way too many activity books, pens and snacks. I will send a big final box to my soldier this week, and ask her to share. Do you send many packages overseas and are you having the same problem I am with customs and returned packages?

It was awfully sweet of you to do that, and I imagine your soldier thinks so as well. Sending "only" letters is still a big thing too. The last time I sent a package overseas, it was to Germany, and cost $22. It wasn't even a big package, but you know ridiculous the prices get. Since I rarely send any overseas, I probably can't give an accurate assessment.

@AmbiePam I have been using the flat rate priority boxes so the postage runs either $17.05 or $8.55. But there are only 4 lines on the custom forms so I have learned to inly send 4 types of items, like candy bars, baby wipes, puzzle books and magazines i one box. And soap, shampoo, body wash and a loofah sponge in one, etc.

I do not send packages of the home at all since it is expensive to send packages to persons I do not know due to the financial hardship I have to go through in the first place.

@Deepizzaguy Well, getting too many packages returned is a waste of money and causes some financial hardship, not to mention disappointment for me.

I had no problems when I send gifts to my grandkids that live in Great Britain.

@jstory07 I think that country is a bit more lenient than the Middle East which is where my last few soldiers have been stationed.

You tried to do it. The letters would be a lot simpler

@wolfgirl569 Yes, and after 18 months I am burnt out on the packages. It's letter time for me! I like to write long letters too so that should work out okay.
