Second Life--Fun game? Strange obsession? Both?

I've just recently heard about Second Life, an online game/community with virtual people, buildings, etc. that has many people spending real money --sometimes big bucks-- for virtual houses, cars, etc.
Companies are paying money to have a presence on Second Life, and news agencies have opened news bureaus on Second Life. And it has been announced that the community has it's first millionaire--from making transactions on Second Life.
What's it all about? Anybody here a member? Why spend money on a virtual community instead of your real one?

I haven't joined. It sounded intriguing until I learned how much MONEY people spend doing it. That just seems wasteful. Granted,it's just the same as spending money at the movies... you are paying to be entertained... but some folks can spend a LOT OF MONEY on this site. And I think a lot of them are kids. Where does the money come from?? I dont get it. OH well...

I never hear about. Sound interesting but I wouldn't spend money there. Maybe is good to advertize there but pay...not really.
