Had my second root canal done this morning

I don't remember how long it had been since the first one. Today's root canal was done on the far back left lower molar. Tooth #18, for those of you who know teeth by the numbers. The dentist had a very good chair-side manner and kept me informed about what he was doing throughout the procedure. I let him know when the anesthetic wasn't working. When that happened, he's add a little more. The whole thing took about 90 minutes. I've been home for about 2 hours waiting for the numbness to wear off and the post-procedure discomfort to set it. I've already taken Tylenol to head off the pain. We'll see how well that works. In a few days, I should hear from my dentist about going in to have them put in a final filling or put on a crown. In the meantime, I have to be careful what I chew on the left side of my mouth. Have you ever had a root canal done?

I hope it works out for you. I've never needed a root canal done but Pretty had three done. A year later, those three teeth had to be pulled.

The dentist told me extraction would be the next step if the root canal doesn't work. My first procedure has been fine. Fingers crossed for this one.

@DWDavis The dentist we had at the time did a good job with two crowns for me but all the work he did on Pretty's teeth was bad. Another dentist told us they wished we'd gone to them instead of him... Pretty may still have had those three teeth. (One was number 7 and she hardly smiles anymore. She's too embarrassed by the missing tooth.)

@DaddyEvil That's sad about Pretty's smile. Is there any chance of an implant or a bridge to fill the gap?

No I haven't, but I did get all my teeth pulled at the same time, I was numb for so long after that and was a liquid diet. Hope that it's gets better soon!

My father had to have all his teeth pulled and wore dentures for years before he passed.

@hillhjill My dad smoked and drank, and those both contributed to his teeth basically rotting away and breaking. He quit both in his early 50s, but the damage was done.

Yes, and I was surprised how painless it was. I have had more pain with a cavity fill. I think your root canal will be fine. The thing was I was surprised they could even do it, there was only a fraction of the tooth left, but it worked out fine!

I had a root canal once, and , it dried the tooth up and they eventually had to pull it out.

I'm hoping that won't happen. So far, my first root canal is doing fine. Maybe this one will, too.

I have but I don't remember it as being too dreadful although it did take a long time.

The time went quickly because the dentist kept up a conversation about what he was doing. Listening to him, he was a cheerful fellow, helped the time pass.

@JudyEv I have been very lucky to have had good dentists since I was a kid. When I hear of the horrors some have been through, I count myself blessed.

@DWDavis It makes a huge difference if you have such a dentist.

I hate root canal work. I've had several in the past. Just not fun. I hope yours works out for you. My son had several recently, and after they didn't work, then the dentist decided he has very week teeth. Not enough enamel, which makes his teeth vulnerable to damage. And root canals cost a fortune, as well.

@MarieCoyle Yes, I had to hide my dismay at the amount.

When I saw the bill, I was grateful that K's employer offers family dental coverage for a relatively small premium. Even with that, the co-pay was 40%

@DWDavis I know dental costs are just astronomical. And 40% is still a lot of money.

I had one done once, but the dentist who did it, did a poor job, and eventually the tooth was pulled, and a bridge was required. No surprise, I found a new dentist. Hopefully, your pain is not too bad!

The pain is mild, thanks to Tylenol. I'm sorry you had such a bad experience.

I have had that experience too more than once That was years ago I do have teeth that need attention but as long as there is no pain I just ignore them.

When I was a teen, I had 3 teeth pulled before getting braces. During my time in the service, I had both Wisdom Teeth pulled. I'm hoping no more extractions will be necessary.

“You know I just had a short vacation, Roy Spent it getting a root canal” (Warren Zevon, “Ain’t That Pretty At All”) I’ve had a few. The first one was when I was in the Navy. The dentist doing it refused, at first, to give me any novocaine because he said there were no roots in the tooth, ergo, no pain. So I bit him. Score that one E-1 1, O-6 0.

My mother had a bad experience with novocaine and now has all her dental work done with no anesthetic. I don't know how she stands getting fillings.

Yes. Decades ago. It was very painful. Hopefully today they are much less painful. Hope the second half of your procedure goes well. Have a good evening.

The dentist was generous with his use of anesthetic, and that helped a lot.
