2000 years ago in the Fifth Dynasty of China, King Liyu had a favorite concubine named Yao Niang. He called her the Golden Lotus. She bound her feet and would toe-dance on a platform shaped like a lotus flower.
The rivalry between the many wives and concubines spread food binding down the social ladder.
Lotus feet got more notice than a woman's face.
Footbinding affected over 2 billion, Chinese women. The practice began at age 3 in the woman's life. The size of a woman's feet determined what man, of what standing, she would marry.
They are told by their mother's that they must endure the pain now so they will get a good husband later. The Lotus women were thought to be more noble.

What a horrific tradition. My coworker and I read a book called "Snowflower and the Secret Fan" years ago that talked about the process of footbinding. We were shocked.
They would break the bones in their feet, fold them, bind them, and then force the girls to walk on their broken feet to further crush the bones.

And that's why they took those little steps and didn't run away.

I was a kid when I learned about this from my sister. We had playmates that were Chinese. I was just about 4 or 5 years old then and my sisters called our friend Lotus Feet. When I asked about that, they explained to me how it was with Chinese women. But of course during that time, in the 80s, we hardly see any Chinese women binding their feet anymore.

That is a horrific and torturous tradition and should never have been allowed,

I know about footbinding; and it's a horrible tradition.
