The storms are past, and it’s a lovely Monday (well, for a Monday). I’m getting ready to take a walk outside since the humidity is lower, but first lunch and a song! Today’s song from 1983 is another super-big hit! Can you believe this song is now 40?!!
#5: Karma Chameleon - Culture Club
Now the sons of the South have a band for our entertainment this evening. Culture Club, and the good ol’ Boy George! Let’s put our hands together for a guy who looks like Bob Marley and Brooke Shields! “Do you really want to hurt me.” Yes, we do!
(Robin Williams)
Sometimes I wonder if we would ever have noticed Culture Club if Boy George had dressed “conservatively.” Hey, Elton had ditched the costumes by then, so someone had to take over!
Here’s an interesting thing from Picky Wedia: Boy George said they were a little hesitant to record this because it “sounded country.” Well, more country sounding than yesterday’s song and way less country than tomorrow’s for certain! But you know, he does have a point. This would probably be rejected by modern country radio stations for sounding “too country.”
This was Culture Club’s biggest hit in their short but enjoyable music career. It was great then and still sounds good. All part of the hodgepodge of the early 80s.
Karma Chameleon
Written by Boy George, Jon Moss, Mikey Craig, Roy Hay, and Phil Pickett
Recorded by Culture Club
From Colour By Numbers, 1983
My love was an addiction:

There is no way anyone would NOT know this one . For sure it was played over and over and over again (and still!). Culture Club / Boy George's style is a huge 80s icon . . . if you missed them/him, you must've been on a completely different planet!!!

@FourWalls Really?? How is that even possible? Now that I think of it, I'm not sure what kind of music he likes (scrolling to snoop now ).

Oh, Daddy Evil doesn’t know it, but I expect nothing less from him.

@much2say — he’s like Sergeant Schultz, he knows nothing, NOTHING! about music.

Lots of humor directed at this song, but it’s so good.

Guess it’s the harmonica. Like that’s never been used in rock or blues…..

@FourWalls The harmonica does add to the country ambiance of the song.

Great! Listen to it again instead of the song at #4. It is a guaranteed migraine inducer, so play this one again instead.

Yes he was. But beneath the gimmick lay a lot of talent.

Gotta say no on this one. Stuff like that made me long for 60's music. But guess there is always something for everyone. And outrageous always helps.

Understood. There’s nothing that ever pleased everyone (“so you’ve got to please yourself.” AsRick Nelson reminded us).

That's may be true about Boy George costume. I never thought of that before, and yes many people wanted to hurt him (Robin Williams knew what he was talking about). lol

Robin Williams would make fun of anything. That’s what made him so good as a comedian.

They over played this on the radio so I can't listen to it anymore!

I totally understand. I’m that way with “Hotel California,” even though the Eagles are one of my all-time favorite bands!
