The US Supreme Court struck down Biden's student loan forgiveness plan

It was supposed to eliminate $10,000 in student loan debt for most borrowers and up to $20,000 for recipients of PELL grants which are for lower-income students. It was widely expected that the court would invalidate Biden's plan. I had mixed feelings about it. After 22 years of graduating/working I still owe almost $5000 in loans so I certainly wasn't going to be upset if that was wiped out, especially after so many people received hundreds of thousands and millions of dollars in PPP "loans" that didn't have to be repaid during COVID. Biden is supposed to announce some new plans regarding student debt relief this afternoon. I will be interested to see what they are.

I have a feeling that, if the Republicans stay in power in one branch of Congress, they’re going to insist on accountability and repayment of some of that “free covid money” that Orangeface gave away. At least, I hope so.

Republican accountability is an oxymoron.

@DWDavis — yeah, I know. Actually, political accountability is an oxymoron, but it seems like the GOP (grafting old pukers) are trying to corner the market.

I don't like the decision, but I understand it. Technically, forgiving the loans amounts to spending, and all spending bills must originate in the House of Representatives. The things that anger me about it are, like you, why were all those Republican Congress members forgiven for their PPP loans? Why were they even allowed them to begin with?

@NJChicaa This whole student loan forgiveness debacle has been keeping Son2 and GF on tenterhooks for a while. He's prepaid all his interest and will have to start paying down the principle soon unless something is finally decided.

Yeah same here. The PPP loans that were "forgiven" are A-OK but student loan relief is not.

If the students who have availed loans are earning well now, I don't think the US government should give them relief from the loan. The country's economy will suffer.

Oh, that's quite a hot topic! The Supreme Court's decision on the student loan forgiveness plan was expected, but it leaves us with mixed feelings. Many were hoping for some relief, but we also understand the complexity of the issue. Let's hope for more thoughtful solutions to tackle student loan debt in the future
