Is it true that Jakarta is sinking?

Hi my people! I hope everything is very much okay with you people in here. I have been watching the International news in this evening.. I was then surprised to hear that Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia is sinking. This is because the city faces myriad threats from flooding as it has some river's that flow in to it. 40% of the city is below the sea level. However the excessively illegal extraction of underground water causes the subsidence with some parts of the Northern Jakarta's sinking four metres in the past 20 years. However the government is constructing a city somewhere else so that the capital can be safeguarded. What do you think?

I think all the continents are gradually sinking. It’s been going on for many, many years and it’s getting to the danger point.

I think with the glaciers and polar cap melting, all the cities below sea level or at sea level are in danger. Enjoy your day.

That's very terrible. They also said that our city, Mombasa is on the verge of sinking some years back.

wherever we are it is possible, but if water absorption in Jakarta goes well then we will not drown.

@Treborika actually building makes water infiltration less and unable to counteract the swiftness of the river when there is very heavy rain. moving the capital is not a solution, the government cannot even solve religious problems in Indonesia.

I think the issue is becoming more seriously day by day that the government of Indonesia has commenced the construction of another city.

I've heard this too and I think the island of Fiji is under threat as the level of sea water rises.

@Treborika Yes, that's what we've been hearing. Not sinking so much but as sea levels are rising so the water encroaches on the land.

I am afraid that Jakarta will be sinking due to the fact the city has illegal extraction is one reason for the trouble in that neck of the woods.

I don’t know, but for hundreds of years people have been predicting part of California was going to break off into the ocean, and it hasn’t yet. Now, they are saying part of Florida is soon too covered in water. I don’t know the absolute facts, but I’d be cautious about believing it.

Sounds like it is something that will be inevitable. It will just be hard to get everyone and everything moved on time,
