There is a process to prepare powder from turmeric rhizomes. Once a year the plants are pulled out - they will be mostly dead by then. They are then washed and boiled, cut into tiny pieces and dried in the sun for a few days. The dried stuff is then put in a blender and the powder is ready. There is demand for fresh turmeric which is obtained by pulling out the plants when the leaves are fresh Fresh leaves are sold in the market as also fresh turmeric. We have turmeric in our garden and we have followed that process and produced our own powder The leaves have a nice aroma and they are used to wrap while making rice preparations that has coconut and jaggery in it that is steamed. The leaves in our garden are ready and I will use them for making that item. Image Credit:

I'm not sure if I've ever used it except maybe as a vitamin. I think it's suppose to be really good for you.

We use the powder in many of our dishes both meat, fish and vegetables. Many here add it to their milk. You can search for its benefits healthwise too.

You have everything in that garden! I like to keep turmeric on hand because of the health properties.

@allknowing A little bit, yes. I imagine I use it about once a week in whatever I’m making for dinner.

I got just one plant from my mother's garden years ago. Do you not use it in your cooking?

Fresh turmeric is not used in cooking but yes powder made at home is far better than what one gets in the market.

Turmeric has numerous health benefits and effects. It prevents cancer and can contribute to infertility at a high enough dosage. I have tried it on yellow squash before with pepper, and the combination made my stomach a little sick. It is not for me right now.
